Many riders instinctively choose “heavy gears, low cadence, and hard pedaling” on steep climbs. On mountain roads at 300m elevation, this might be fine, but at Wuling’s 3000m+, it’s poison that causes your muscles to fail prematurely.

A Quick Look at Cadence Physiology

Cadence is the number of pedal revolutions per minute, measured in rpm.

  • Low cadence (50-65 rpm): Higher torque per pedal stroke, primarily recruits Type II (fast-twitch) muscle fibers
  • High cadence (85-100 rpm): Lower torque per stroke, primarily recruits Type I (slow-twitch) muscle fibers + cardiovascular system

Muscles vs. Cardiovascular System — Which Fails First?

At Wuling’s 3000m+, muscle glycogen is a finite resource, and oxygen is also a finite resource, but:

  • Low cadence = depletes limited muscle glycogen
  • High cadence = depletes limited oxygen

At first glance, both are limited, but muscle glycogen cannot be replenished once depleted (that’s the moment you cramp), while oxygen intake can be restored after 1-2 minutes of easing off.

Optimal Cadence Range

General Climbing (Elevation < 2000m)

  • Recommended cadence: 70-80 rpm
  • The balance point between torque and rhythm

Mid-Altitude (2000-2700m)

  • Recommended cadence: 75-85 rpm
  • Slightly adjust toward higher cadence

High Altitude (2700m+)

  • Recommended cadence: 80-90 rpm
  • Protects muscles, enhances cardiovascular circulation

Gear Ratio Preparation

To maintain 80 rpm on steep climbs, the gear ratio must be light enough. A 34T chainring + 32T cassette is just the starting point; many riders need 34×34 or lighter on the Kunyang → Wuling section.

How to Train High Cadence

1. Daily Base Cadence Training

  • Set at Z2 intensity
  • Maintain 95-100 rpm for 15-20 minutes
  • 2 sessions per week
  • Purpose: Get the nervous system accustomed to high cadence

2. Climbing Cadence Training

  • Find a 5-8% grade, 10-15 minutes long
  • Force yourself to use a light gear and maintain 80-85 rpm
  • 1 session per week
  • Purpose: Simulate Wuling conditions

3. Cadence Interval Practice

  • Alternate 2 minutes at 70 rpm + 2 minutes at 90 rpm
  • 8-10 sets
  • Feel the switching of muscular and cardiovascular load

Real-Time Adjustment Strategy (Race Day)

Feel muscle soreness / impending cramp → Shift 1-2 gears easier, increase cadence by +10 rpm

Feel too breathless, heart rate spiking → Shift 1 gear harder, decrease cadence by -5-10 rpm

The Role of Standing Climbs

When standing, cadence drops to 50-65 rpm. This is for short bursts only, no more than 30 seconds at a time, and you should immediately sit back down and raise cadence to 85+. The value of standing climbs:

  • Briefly changes muscle recruitment patterns
  • Relieves pressure from the seated position
  • Powers through short, steep sections (like the final hairpins at Kunyang)
