The Final Month Before the West Approach to Wuling: 10 Key Points for Your Final Sprint Training
After months of accumulated training, the final 30 days are actually the most critical. Many riders overtrain or over-rest during this phase, wasting all their previous efforts. This action checklist for the final month will help you finish strong and precise.
Mindset Shift: From “Accumulation” to “Peaking”
In the first 2 months, your goal was to accumulate fitness; in the final 30 days, it’s about converting that accumulation into peak performance on race day.
The difference:
- ❌ No longer chasing weekly mileage/climbing records
- ✅ Focusing on recovery quality, neural activation, and equipment familiarity
30-Day Schedule Overview
| Phase | Days | Training Volume | Intensity | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overload | D-30~D-21 | 100% | High | Final fitness stimulus |
| Transition | D-20~D-14 | 80% | High intensity, low volume | Let the body absorb training effects |
| Taper | D-13~D-7 | 60% | Maintain neural freshness | Main taper phase |
| Race Week | D-6~D-1 | 30% | Very short | Full recovery, pre-race activation |
The 10 Key Points
1. D-30~D-21: Do Your Final Long Ride Challenge
Timing: Weekend around D-28
Content: 150-180 km continuous, 2500-3000m climbing
Purpose: Confirm your nutrition, equipment, and mindset can handle a long ride; the final meaningful fitness stimulus
Note: Keep intensity moderate, mainly Z2-Z3
2. D-25: FTP Retest (Optional)
Four weeks before the race is the last suitable time to test FTP. Update your power zones for more precise pacing.
3. D-20~D-14: Cut Mileage but Keep Intensity
Reduce mileage by 20%, but keep 1-2 high-intensity interval sessions:
- 4×8min @ 95% FTP
- 3×5min @ 108% FTP
Purpose: Maintain nervous system activity, preventing the body from “thinking it’s time to rest” during the taper.
4. D-14: Full Equipment Dress Rehearsal
Don’t try new equipment on race day. On the D-14 weekend:
- Wear the clothes you’ll wear, the helmet you’ll wear
- Use the cleats, socks, and gloves you’ll use
- Eat the nutrition and drink the fluids you’ll use
Adjust anything uncomfortable immediately — you still have 14 days of buffer.
5. D-13~D-7: Main Taper Phase
Reduce mileage to 60% of original, but maintain frequency (don’t suddenly stop riding):
- Monday: Rest
- Tuesday: 45min including 3×3min @ FTP
- Wednesday: 45min Z2
- Thursday: Rest
- Friday: 60min including 2×5min @ FTP
- Saturday: 90min Z2 + long climb
- Sunday: 60min recovery ride
6. D-10: Professional Bike Service
Do it early, not right before the race:
- Brake pads, brake fluid
- Gear adjustment, chain wear
- Tire wear, tire pressure standards
- Saddle and handlebar position
A 10-day window gives you time to fix any surprises. Never do major maintenance 2 days before the race.
7. D-7: Final Long Ride + Tapering
2-3 hours of Z2 on Sunday, simulating the first half of the race. Don’t push it.
8. D-6~D-3: Full Taper
- Ride 30-45 minutes daily, intensity at Z1-Z2
- Add 2-3 × 15-20 second sprints daily (maintain neural freshness)
- Sleep more, hydrate more, cut back on fried foods
9. D-2: Easy Ride + Good Sleep
- 30min easy ride in the morning (don’t stay sedentary; keep blood flowing)
- Hydrate and take electrolytes throughout the day
- In bed before 10 PM
10. D-1: Full Preparation, Early to Bed
- 15-20min very short ride in the morning, plus 2×20s sprints
- Finish all packing before noon: race number, nutrition, clothing, bike
- Sleep at 9-10 PM (even if you can’t sleep, at least lie down)
Common Taper Mistakes
Mistake 1: “Worried, so I train more”
The fitness accumulated over the previous 3 months won’t disappear from 2 weeks of reduced training. The harm of overtraining far outweighs undertraining.
Mistake 2: “Worried, so I stop training completely”
After 7 full days of rest, your “race-day feel” will be rusty, and your nervous system won’t be activated.
Mistake 3: “Trying new equipment before the race”
New wheels, new shoes, new saddle — save them all for after the race.
Mistake 4: “Dieting before the race”
In the final week, you need full glycogen stores. Don’t worry about that 1-2 kg.
Mistake 5: “Sleepless from pre-race nerves”
Getting good sleep on D-2 is important; a poor night on D-1 isn’t fatal. What matters more is relaxing your mind.
Mental Preparation
Do three things in the 7 days before the race:
- Visualization: Every night, imagine yourself on each section of Wuling
- Plan B: Think through responses to various scenarios (mechanical failure, physical discomfort)
- Lower expectations: If you can enjoy the race, the time is a byproduct
Pre-Race Meals
D-1 Dinner: Rice-based, low in fried foods, moderate lean protein, plenty of vegetables — slightly larger portions than usual
D-0 Breakfast: 2-3 hours before departure — oatmeal / bread / banana, about 400-500 kcal
D-0 30 minutes before departure: One banana + one bottle of sports drink
Conclusion
The final month isn’t about another sprint — it’s about precisely unleashing the fitness you’ve worked so hard to build, on race day. Follow this checklist, and you’ll stand at the starting line in peak condition, letting the previous 3 months of training bear fruit.
