24-Hour Eating Timeline the Day Before Wuling: Hour-by-Hour Carb-Loading Schedule

健康與醫學

Why Precision to the Hour Matters

The Wuling Challenge typically starts between 5:30 and 6:30 AM, covering 55K from Puli to Wuling with 3,275m of climbing. The average rider expends 4,500–6,000 kcal on total climbing, and glycogen stores are half-depleted within the first 90 minutes. If your carbohydrate loading in the 24 hours before the race isn’t done right, you’ll feel noticeably weak starting at the Wushe section (km 27).

There are three keys to hour-level precision:

  1. Avoid eating too much at once: Gastric emptying is limited; consuming more than 100g of carbs at a single sitting easily causes bloating
  2. Complete the bulk of loading before bed: Digestive efficiency drops after 9 PM
  3. Keep blood sugar stable in the morning: The final full meal should be 3 hours before the start

D-1 Full Timeline (The Day Before)

07:00 Breakfast: High-Carb, Low-Fat, Low-Fiber

  • 4 slices of white toast + 1 banana + 2 packs of jam + 500ml sports drink
  • Carb intake: ~130g
  • Avoid: Oatmeal, brown rice, nuts (fiber increases GI burden 24 hours later)

10:00 Snack: Liquid Carbs

  • 1 banana + 200ml of fermented milk drink or 500ml sports drink
  • Carb intake: ~50g
  • Hydration goal: 1L consumed cumulatively by this point

12:00 Lunch: White Rice as the Base

  • 1.5 bowls of white rice (~240g) + 100g chicken breast + lightly blanched vegetables (small amount) + miso soup
  • Carb intake: ~90g
  • Avoid: Braised pork rice, fried chicken cutlet, raw salad, spicy food

15:00 Snack: Refined Sugar Top-Up

  • Bread (cake-style or pineapple bun) + 250ml apple juice
  • Carb intake: ~70g
  • This is the final golden window for glycogen loading

18:00 Dinner: Avoid Bloating

  • 1 bowl of udon noodles + 1 boiled egg + steamed egg
  • Carb intake: ~70g
  • Portion 20% smaller than usual: Avoid stomach burden affecting sleep

20:00 Wrap-Up: Last Solid Food

  • 4 soda crackers + 300ml honey water
  • Carb intake: ~40g
  • After this, only plain water—no more solids

D-1 Totals

Item Value
Total carbs ~450g
Carbs per kg body weight 7–8g/kg (for a 70kg rider)
Total fluid ~2.5L
Protein ~80g (maintained but not excessive)
Fat Keep below 50g

D-Day Early Morning Timeline

03:30 First Bite Upon Waking

  • 2 slices of white toast + honey + 200ml black coffee (~80mg caffeine)
  • Carbs: ~50g
  • Black coffee promotes bowel movement, helping you finish your “business” before the start

04:30 Final Full Meal Before Departure

  • 1 bowl of plain rice porridge + pickled cucumber + 1 tea egg
  • Carbs: ~40g
  • One hour until the start—this is the last chance for solid food

05:30 30 Minutes Before the Start

  • 1 energy gel (caffeinated version) + 200ml sports drink
  • Carbs: ~25g
  • This pushes blood sugar to a small peak, perfectly timed with the start

The Three Most Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: All-You-Can-Eat Pasta on D-1

The cream sauce in restaurant pasta is too high in fat, which delays gastric emptying. Better to cook instant noodles at the hotel and add white toast.

Mistake 2: Celebrating with Beer at D-1 Dinner

Alcohol inhibits glycogen synthesis, acts as a diuretic, and impairs sleep quality—it can cut training effectiveness by at least half.

Mistake 3: Taking an Energy Gel Only 1 Hour Before the Start

Energy gels cause a rapid blood sugar spike followed by a rebound drop (reactive hypoglycemia), leaving you flat once you hit the road. Instead, take it 15–30 minutes before the start.

Body Weight and Glycogen Relationship

After carbohydrate loading is complete, body weight will increase by 1.5–2kg (each 1g of glycogen binds 3g of water). This is normal—don’t panic and cut back. For a 70kg rider, full glycogen stores can sustain an extra 90 minutes of high-intensity effort.

Conclusion

The day before Wuling isn’t about “eating as much as possible”—it’s about “spreading intake, avoiding burden, and finishing the loading.” Print out the timeline and stick it on the hotel fridge, follow the schedule, and you’ll thank yourself after the Wushe section.
