Wuling Mid-Ride Rest Strategy: Stop Decisions at the 3 Key Points of Renzhiguan, Wushe, and Cuifeng

賽事分析

Why Rest Stops on Wuling Are a Science

The western route to Wuling spans 55K with roughly 3,275m of climbing, and most amateur riders finish in 4.5–7 hours. Stopping to rest may seem simple, but every time you get off the bike, it comes with three costs: time lost, body heat loss, and muscle re-activation when getting back on the pedals.

According to a sample of 2023 Chongyue Cup finishers (n=412), riders in the 5–6 hour finish group averaged 2.8 stops at 4.2 minutes each, losing about 12 minutes in total—enough to decide whether you break 5 hours.

Decision Matrix for 3 Key Stop Points

Location Distance Elevation Recommended Stop Refueling Focus
Renzhiguan (Provincial Hwy 14, 21K mark) 16K ~600m 1–2 minutes Refill 500ml water, check tire pressure
Wushe Police Station 26K ~1,148m 3–5 minutes Fill second bottle, 1 energy gel
Cuifeng Aid Station 41K ~2,300m 2–3 minutes Sodium-containing drink, put on light jacket

1. Renzhiguan: The End of the Warm-Up

Renzhiguan marks the end of the gentle 16K warm-up climb, and the gradient ahead jumps from an average of 3% to 6–7%. It is recommended to stop for 1–2 minutes to:

  • Check thigh muscle tightness (estimated CK value)
  • Drink 250–400ml of a beverage containing 600mg sodium
  • Check tire pressure (80psi in summer, 85psi in winter)

Not recommended: Removing arm warmers or leg warmers—the gradient over the next 10K will quickly push your heart rate up, and your body temperature has not yet reached a steady state.

2. Wushe: The Strategic Refueling Point

At 1,148m elevation with 29K and 2,127m of climbing still ahead, Wushe is the most important refueling point of the entire ride. Pro riders use this stop to:

  • Swap in a second bottle (with BCAA + 500mg sodium)
  • Take in 30g of carbohydrates (energy gel or banana)
  • Check GPS and heart rate monitor battery

A 3–5 minute stop is recommended. If you stay over 8 minutes, the drop in muscle temperature will send your heart rate out of control (+15bpm or more) for the first 2K of pedaling.

3. Cuifeng: The High-Altitude Transition Point

At 2,300m, Cuifeng is the stop where body heat is lost the fastest. Temperatures at the summit average 12°C lower than Puli, and afternoon clouds and fog make it feel another 3–5°C colder.

Recommendations:

  • Start preparing your jacket 2K before stopping
  • Strictly keep the stop under 3 minutes
  • Refill 250ml of water (no need for a lot—only 14K remain)
  • Check for any sharp pain in the knees or hips

3 Situations When You Should NOT Stop

  1. Heart rate has just dropped to Z2: Your body has entered a steady state; stopping will disrupt your metabolic rhythm
  2. Weather is turning and clouds/fog are descending: Heavy fog or rain may arrive within 30 minutes—ride through faster
  3. A large group is approaching from behind: Drafting with the group can save 5–8% of power; stopping means losing your companions

3 Signals When You MUST Stop

  1. Heart rate stays above threshold + 10bpm for more than 5 minutes (sign of overheating)
  2. Cramp warning signs in the thighs or calves (localized twitching)
  3. Visible dark spots in your vision or dizziness (dehydration or low blood sugar)

Posture and Actions When Stopped

Do not sit down immediately after stopping—the sudden drop in venous return can cause orthostatic hypotension. Recommendations:

  1. Stand for 30 seconds, alternately pedaling one foot at a time to maintain blood circulation
  2. Stretch the quadriceps and calves for 20 seconds
  3. Face away from the wind while refueling
  4. Before getting back on the road, pedal 200m in a low gear before shifting

Conclusion: Advice for 3 Target Groups

  • Sub-4 hours: Stop only at Wushe for 2 minutes; refuel on the bike for the rest
  • Sub-5 hours: Stop once each at Renzhiguan, Wushe, and Cuifeng, keeping total stop time under 10 minutes
  • Just finishing: You may add one more stop before Kunyang (4 total), but each stop must still be under 5 minutes

Stopping is strategy, not relaxation—treat every dismount like a pit stop, and your Wuling time will improve significantly.
