Why “Higher Is Faster” Is Wrong in Mixed-Surface Racing

It Is the Epitome of Equipment Rationality

The tire pressure matrix condenses the spirit of the entire equipment theme cluster: there is no single optimum, only a compromise “for your route, your weight, your system”; and it is interconnected with tubeless, gravel racing, and descending grip. Treating it as “just pump it up” is the same mistake as treating aero wheels as “deeper is faster” or a time-trial bike as “a faster road bike”—compressing a multi-variable problem into a single slogan.

Tire pressure is the cheapest—yet most often mis-set—dial in mixed-terrain racing. One number simultaneously determines how fast you go, how stable you grip, and whether you flat—and these goals fight each other, so there is no perfect solution. Racers don’t ask “what’s the right pressure?” They ask, “given the terrain I expect, which goal am I willing to sacrifice for which?” The moment you turn that dial before the race, you’ve already decided half your result.
