It’s Not About “Giving Up Sport for Your Kids” or “Ignoring Your Kids for Sport”
After having children, athletes often fall into a guilty either-or dilemma: either sacrifice training to spend time with the kids, or squeeze in training time and neglect the family. But there’s a third path—raising kids and sport together. However, if this path is poorly designed, it can ruin both the quality of your training and your child’s interest in sport.
Two Different Needs Must Be Separated
| Type | Purpose | Why They Can’t Be Mixed |
|---|---|---|
| Your training | Maintain/improve fitness, has intensity requirements | Hard to achieve quality with kids in tow |
| Parent-child activities | Bonding, fun, cultivating interest | Shouldn’t become your workout plan |
Key insight: “Parent-child rides and runs” are, most of the time, “parent-child time,” not “your training.” Confusing the two is the root cause of exhausted parents and fearful kids.
Design by Developmental Stage
| Child’s Stage | Shared Activity Format | What About Your Training? |
|---|---|---|
| Infants/toddlers | Jogging with a stroller / cycling with a trailer (mind safety and equipment regulations) | Schedule main workouts at other times (e.g., early morning) |
| Preschool | Balance bikes / short accompanied rides, park play | Treat playtime as recovery, no intensity required |
| School age | Family bike paths, easy rides and runs, exploring routes | Keep family days and solo training days separate |
| Teenagers | Can gradually exercise together, but respect their autonomy | Progressively become training partners based on maturity |
Iron Rule #1: Your Child’s Sport Is Not “Yours”
The most common tragedy is projecting your own goals onto your child (pushing pace, comparing distances, demanding results). The primary goal of youth sport is “feeling it’s fun and wanting to come back.” Once it becomes pressure and comparison, most kids will completely quit sport by adolescence—you might win one family ride, but lose their lifelong interest.
Iron Rule #2: Safety Standards Are Non-Negotiable
Trailers/seats for carrying kids, proper kids’ bike sizes, helmets, route selection (prioritize closed bike paths over roads)—these are the bottom line. Ignoring them for convenience carries an unbearable cost.
Iron Rule #3: Protect Your Main Training Plan
Parent-child activities cannot replace the high-quality training you need. Draw clear lines: certain times are “parent-child time” (drop the intensity, be fully present), and certain times are “my training” (covered by the family support system). When both are protected, you won’t end up complaining about and losing out on both fronts.
Turn Family into Supporters, Not Obstacles
The long-term solution is to help your partner and kids understand and embrace why you need to exercise—and even join in. When sport becomes “a family thing” rather than “Dad’s/Mom’s selfish hobby,” conflict drops dramatically, and kids absorb through osmosis that exercise is a normal part of life.
A Word to Guilty Parents
You don’t have to choose between being a “good parent” and being “someone who keeps exercising.” A parent who has an exercise habit, is emotionally stable, and models discipline and health is, in itself, one of the best examples you can give your child—provided you don’t turn it into pressure on them.
Raising kids and sport together isn’t ultimately about how fast they run—it’s about letting them see that “adults can keep loving something and become better through it.” That example is more precious than any family finish-line photo.
