Triathlon Season Review: Turning This Year's Data into Next Year's

A Season Without Review Is Just a Repeated Season

People who race every year yet stay in the same place year after year usually lack one thing: a structured review. Laying out and analyzing the entire season’s training and race data is the only way to know what to change next season—rather than relying on gut feeling and doing it all over again.

The Four-Dimension Review Framework

Dimension Questions to Examine Data Sources
Performance Which segment held the overall result back? Race splits vs. training paces
Training Is the volume/intensity distribution reasonable? Year-round training load curve
Injury When and why did injuries occur? Injury log vs. load spike points
Execution Did you follow the pacing/nutrition plan? In-race data vs. plan

Compare each race’s three-sport splits against training capacity to find the one discipline where “race performance fell clearly below training level”—that is the weakness to invest in next season, not continuing to train your strongest discipline.

Training Dimension: A Health Check on Load Distribution

Look back at the year-round training load and check whether intensity is imbalanced at the extremes, whether recovery weeks were included, and whether volume spiked suddenly. Many “plateaus” are actually distribution errors, not insufficient training.

Injury Dimension: Align with Load Spikes

Align the timing of each injury with the training load curve. In nine out of ten cases, you’ll see a volume or intensity spike 2–4 weeks before the injury—this is hard evidence for progressive planning next season.

Execution Dimension: Plan vs. Reality

Compare actual in-race pacing/nutrition against the pre-race plan. If year after year “the plan is great but execution falls apart,” the problem lies in mental and discipline training—changing the physical workout plan alone won’t help.

Review Output: A One-Page Prescription for Next Season

The review must ultimately be condensed to one page: next season’s most important “one weakness, one training adjustment, one injury prevention measure, and one execution fix.” More than that and you can’t follow through; less and you have no direction.

The Data Alignment Method for the Four-Dimension Review

People who race every year yet stay in the same place usually lack a structured review. Each of the four dimensions has a clear data alignment method: Performance dimension—compare each race’s three-sport splits against training capacity to find the discipline where “race performance fell clearly below training level” (that is the weakness to invest in, not continuing to train your strongest discipline); Injury dimension—align the timing of each injury with the training load curve, and in nine out of ten cases you’ll see a volume or intensity spike 2–4 weeks before the injury.

The Four-Dimension Review Framework

Dimension Questions to Examine Data Sources
Performance Which segment held the overall result back Race splits vs. training paces
Training Is the volume/intensity distribution reasonable Year-round load curve
Injury When and why did injuries occur Injury log vs. load spike points
Execution Did you follow the plan In-race data vs. plan

Common Mistake: Misjudging a “Plateau” as “Not Training Enough”

Many people instinctively add volume when they hit a plateau, but looking back at the year-round load often reveals the real cause is a distribution error—imbalanced intensity at the extremes, no recovery weeks, or sudden volume spikes—rather than insufficient total volume. If year after year “the plan is great but execution falls apart,” the problem lies in mental and discipline training, and changing the physical workout plan won’t help. The review must ultimately be condensed into a one-page prescription for next season: one weakness, one training adjustment, one injury prevention measure, and one execution fix—more than that and you can’t follow through; less and you have no direction. Effort without review is just earnestly repeating the same mistakes for another year.

The most valuable meeting I ever have with an athlete is always that data review at the end of the season. The ones who improve aren’t the ones who train the most—they’re the ones who honestly look at the data every year and change only the right few things. Effort without review is just earnestly repeating the same mistakes for another year.
