Race Overview
The Taiwan KOM Challenge is Asia’s most iconic cycling climbing race, attracting top riders from around the world every year. The route starts from Qixingtan in Hualien, passes through Taroko Gorge, Tianxiang, and Dayuling, and finally climbs to Wuling (elevation 3,275m), covering approximately 105 kilometers in total.

Segment Analysis
Segment 1: Qixingtan to Taroko Arch (20 km)
- Mostly flat, elevation 0-60m
- This is the warm-up segment where the peloton rides together
- Wind speeds can be high; watch out for crosswinds
- Strategy: Stay with the peloton and conserve energy
Segment 2: Taroko to Tianxiang (18 km)
- Along the Liwu River Gorge
- Gentle gradient, averaging 2-3%
- Many tunnels; be mindful of light changes
- Spectacular scenery, but no time to enjoy it during the race
Segment 3: Tianxiang to Bilu Sacred Tree (25 km)
- Gradient increases, averaging 5-6%
- Elevation rises from 500m to 2,150m
- Famous landmarks include Chihsingtan (Nine Turns Cave) and Cimu Bridge
- Key Segment: This is where gaps are opened
Segment 4: Bilu Sacred Tree to Dayuling (12 km)
- Continuous climbing to 2,565m
- Air begins to thin
- Temperature drops noticeably
Segment 5: Dayuling to Wuling (30 km)
- Provincial Highway 14A, passing through Hehuan Mountain
- The final decisive segment
- Some descents followed by more climbing
- The last 5 km is the steepest section
Race Preparation
Fitness Requirements
- Goal: Finish within 6 hours: FTP of at least 3.0 W/kg
- Goal: Finish within 5 hours: FTP of at least 3.5 W/kg
- Goal: Finish within 4 hours: FTP of at least 4.2 W/kg
High-Altitude Acclimatization
- Above 2,500m, oxygen levels are approximately 75% of those at sea level
- It is recommended to stay overnight in the Cingjing or Hehuan Mountain area 1-2 days before the race to acclimatize
- Nutrition strategy should account for reduced appetite at high altitude
Equipment Preparation
- Climbing bike or lightweight frame (weight is the priority)
- Gear ratio of at least 34-32 or lighter
- Insulated windbreaker (temperature difference at the summit can reach 25°C)
- Front and rear lights (essential for tunnel sections)
