Trail Running Annual Periodization Template: An 18-Month Path from Zero to UTMB

單車訓練

Introduction

“Running the UTMB CCC 100K” is a dream for many trail runners, but without a periodized plan, it remains just talk. This article provides an 18-month path from zero base to finishing the CCC, including a complete annual periodization template.

1. 18-Month Path Overview

Month Phase Goal
1-3 Foundation Road running 10K
4-6 Trail introduction Trail 21K
7-9 First trail race Finish 30K
10-12 Distance expansion 50K
13-15 Build phase 80K
16-17 Peak phase CCC simulation
18 Race month UTMB CCC

2. The 5 Key Phases of Annual Periodization

  1. Base Phase (4 months): Build aerobic foundation
  2. Build Phase (3 months): Increase mileage and elevation gain
  3. Strength Phase (3 months): Add specific training
  4. Peak Phase (1.5 months): Simulate race conditions
  5. Race + Recovery Phase (2.5 months): Finish and recover

3. Weekly Training Schedule Structure

Standard training week (pre-peak phase):

  • Monday: Rest or yoga
  • Tuesday: Strength training 60 minutes
  • Wednesday: Technical running or hill repeats 60-90 minutes
  • Thursday: Tempo run or recovery run 45-60 minutes
  • Friday: Rest
  • Saturday: Long slow distance (LSD) on trails 4-7 hours
  • Sunday: Recovery run or cross-training 60-90 minutes

4. Monthly Cycles and Elevation Gain (D+) Targets

Every 4 weeks forms 1 micro cycle: Week 1 build, Week 2 strengthen, Week 3 peak, Week 4 taper. Monthly elevation gain (D+) targets:

  • Months 1-3: 5,000m/month
  • Months 4-6: 7,500m/month
  • Months 7-9: 10,000m/month
  • Months 10-12: 12,500m/month
  • Months 13-15: 15,000m/month
  • Months 16-17: 17,500m/month

5. Taiwan Training Route Progression

  • Foundation phase: Yangmingshan Erziping, Qingtiangang
  • Build phase: Qixing Mountain, Datun Mountain
  • Strength phase: Wulai Tonghou, Beichatian Mountain
  • Peak phase: Nenggao Andongjun, Hehuan Mountain Range
  • CCC simulation: Yushan Main Peak out-and-back in one day

6. Key Race Milestones

  • Month 6: First 21K trail race
  • Month 9: First 30K trail race
  • Month 12: First 50K trail race
  • Month 15: First 80K trail race
  • Month 18: CCC 100K (target race)

7. Taper Details

The 3-week taper before the CCC:

  • Week -3: Training volume at 70%
  • Week -2: Training volume at 50%
  • Week -1: Training volume at 30%
  • Race week: Only easy runs and dynamic stretching

Tapering is not “stopping training,” but reducing volume while maintaining intensity.

Practical Advice

  • Don’t skip levels; progress gradually from the basics
  • Taper every 4 weeks to avoid overtraining
  • Establish a relationship with a sports medicine clinic
  • Start simulating nutrition 6 months before the race
  • Keep 1-2 “practice races” to test gear

Conclusion

The CCC, UTMB, and HK4TUC are not stages for prodigies, but proof of those who patiently execute a periodized plan. From the first step on Yangmingshan to the finish line in Chamonix, 18 months is enough to complete this progression.
