In Taiwanese cycling events, the time trial is a relatively rare format, but its value for training is extremely high:
- FTP Testing: A 20-minute individual time trial is the standard method for FTP testing
- Wuling Time Trial: The Wuling Challenge is essentially an ultra-long climbing time trial, with results reflecting a pure indicator of climbing power output
- Zwift/RGT Indoor Time Trials: Time trials on indoor platforms eliminate weather and traffic variables, making them the best tool for objectively comparing performance
Practical Advice
- The most common mistake in a time trial is “starting too fast”: It is recommended to output 5% less power than your target for the first 10% of the course to ensure you have strength to push in the latter part
- Practice the time trial position: The aerodynamic position on TT handlebars requires specific training; prolonged forearm support requires adaptation of the shoulder and neck muscles
- Train using a power meter: The time trial is the discipline that needs a power meter the most. Without peloton speed as a reference, power is the only objective pacing indicator
- Warm up thoroughly before the race: A time trial demands maximum output from the start. Racing without a warm-up will significantly compromise early performance. It is recommended to complete a warm-up 30–45 minutes before the start
