Take the full Wuling course (approximately 50 km, finish time 3.5–5 hours) as an example: set a target power of 75–82% FTP. If your FTP is 220W, your target power is 165–180W.

Segment strategy:

  • First 25 km (below 1,000 m elevation): Stay conservative below 175W, establish a rhythm, and avoid lactate accumulation
  • Middle 25–40 km (1,000–2,000 m elevation): Maintain 170W, feel your breathing rhythm, and drop to 160W if necessary
  • Final 40–50 km (2,000–3,275 m elevation): Power naturally declines at high altitude; use RPE 7–8 (rating of perceived exertion scale 1–10) as the pacing guide rather than forcing a fixed power target

Power Correction at High Altitude

KOM events in Taiwan often involve high-altitude sections, which significantly affect power output:

  • 1,000 m elevation: Power decreases by approximately 3–4%
  • 2,000 m elevation: Power decreases by approximately 7–8%
  • 3,000 m elevation: Power decreases by approximately 12–15%

This means that on the upper sections of Wuling, even if your perceived effort remains unchanged, your actual power output will be 12–15% lower than at sea level. This is a normal physiological response—there is no need to force higher output. Instead, switch to using RPE (rating of perceived exertion) as your pacing guide.

Practical Recommendations

  1. Calibrate your power meter before the race: Temperature changes can affect power meter readings. Perform a zero offset calibration before starting on race day.
  2. Set a power ceiling alert: Set an alert on your Garmin or Wahoo for when power exceeds your target. The first half is especially prone to over-powering due to excitement.
