The problem often isn’t the effort level, but a lack of Periodization. Periodized training means systematically dividing the year’s training into distinct phases based on target race dates, with clear intensity ratios, training focus, and recovery plans for each phase. Training without periodization is like a movie without a script—no matter how hard the actors try, it’s difficult to deliver a compelling, climactic ending.


The Basic Framework of Periodized Training

Phase 1: Transition Period

Duration: 2–4 weeks (after the main race)

This is a time when both body and mind truly need rest.

  • Intensity distribution: Complete rest or very easy aerobic activity (Z1–Z2, no more than 60 minutes)
  • Power targets: No restrictions whatsoever; focus entirely on enjoyment and recovery
  • Other activities: Trying other sports is encouraged (swimming, light running, hiking) to maintain the exercise habit while changing things up
  • Psychological function: Recharge training motivation and avoid year-round training burnout

Phase 2: Base Period

Duration: 8–16 weeks (typically autumn/winter in Taiwan)

The base period is the most underrated yet most important phase of the entire annual training plan for amateur cyclists.

  • Z2 training intensity too high (it feels too easy, so riders unconsciously push harder)
  • Skipping the base period and jumping straight into the build period (“I just raced last week, I’m fit enough”)

Phase 3: Build Period

Duration: 6–10 weeks

The build period is the “chemical reaction phase” of fitness quality—building on the aerobic foundation established in the base period, gradually adding more high-intensity stimuli to trigger higher-level physiological adaptations.

The Taper Paradox:

Many cyclists fear reducing training volume before a race, worried about “losing fitness.” Research shows that training volume can be reduced by 30–50%, but as long as sufficient training intensity is maintained, FTP and VO2max will not significantly decline within 2–3 weeks, while the elimination of fatigue brings out true performance.

  • Autumn/Winter (October–March): Taiwan’s mountain climate is cool, making this the golden window for base-period long rides
  • Spring (March–May): Taiwan’s main race season (Tour de Taiwan-related events, Wuling Challenge, etc.), the timing for peak fitness

  • Flexible adjustment is necessary: Illness, work stress, and family matters can all disrupt the plan; allow yourself to adjust flexibly, but keep the overall direction of the periodization intact
  • Record feelings, not just numbers: Log weekly sleep quality, motivation levels, and physical sensations in your training diary—these subjective indicators are important feedback for executing periodization
