The Core Contradiction of Bikepacking Food
A one-day bikepacking ride burns 4,000-6,000 kcal (basal metabolic rate 1,800 + riding 2,200-4,200), but you can’t possibly carry 3 kg of food. The core of food planning is “calorie density”—how many kcal each gram provides.
Food Calorie Density Ranking
| Food | kcal/100g | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Olive oil | 884 | Extremely high, but hard to carry |
| Peanut butter | 588 | Excellent |
| Nuts (almonds) | 580 | Excellent |
| Chocolate (70%) | 540 | Excellent |
| Cheese (hard) | 400 | Good |
| Oats | 380 | Good |
| Pasta | 370 | Good (dry) |
| Rice | 350 | Good (dry) |
| Energy bars | 350 | Fair |
| Cookies | 480 | High (but lots of sugar) |
| Bananas | 90 | Low (heavy) |
| Bread | 250 | Fair |
Conclusion: Nuts, peanut butter, chocolate, and olive oil are bikepacking godsends. Bananas taste great but have too low a calorie density.
Sample One-Day Food Plan
Using a daily burn of 5,500 kcal and a target food weight of 800g as an example:
Breakfast (before departure, 800 kcal):
- Oats 80g (300 kcal)
- Nuts 30g (174 kcal)
- Protein powder 30g (120 kcal)
- Instant coffee + sugar (50 kcal)
- Chocolate 30g (160 kcal)
During riding (200-300 kcal per hour, 1,800 kcal total):
- 4 energy gels (400 kcal)
- 3 energy bars (750 kcal)
- Nuts 100g (580 kcal)
- Hydration mix (sports drink powder)
Lunch (at a resupply point, 1,500 kcal):
- 2 7-Eleven onigiri (500 kcal)
- 2 tea eggs (150 kcal)
- Chocolate milk (350 kcal)
- 1 banana (90 kcal)
- Cookies 100g (480 kcal)
Dinner (at camp, 1,400 kcal):
- Instant pasta 100g (370 kcal)
- Canned tuna (150 kcal)
- Olive oil 30g (265 kcal)
- Cheese 50g (200 kcal)
- Chocolate 50g (270 kcal)
- Protein powder 30g (120 kcal)
Total: 5,500 kcal, roughly 800g of self-carried food (including items purchased at resupply points)
Resupply Point Density Strategy
Adjust how much food you carry based on the distance between resupply points:
| Resupply interval | Food to carry | Water to carry |
|---|---|---|
| <30 km | 500g | 1L |
| 30-60 km | 800g | 1.5L |
| 60-100 km | 1200g | 2.5L |
| 100-150 km | 1800g | 3.5L |
| >150 km | 2500g+ | 4L+ |
Food Purchasing for Multi-Day Trips
You can’t carry all your food at once for a 5-day bikepacking trip—you must buy along the way. Strategy:
- Day one: Buy food for that day plus the next day’s breakfast
- Every evening: Buy the full day’s food for the following day
- Emergency reserve: Always keep 1,500 kcal of dry rations (5 energy bars + 100g nuts)
Recommended Resupply at 7-Eleven and FamilyMart
Taiwan’s convenience stores are a bikepacking paradise. Recommended combos:
Quick refuel during riding (done in 5 minutes):
- Onigiri (300 kcal) + banana (90) + chocolate milk (350) = 740 kcal, NT$ 80
Lunch (10 minutes):
- Microwaved pasta (600 kcal) + 2 tea eggs (150) + latte (150) = 900 kcal, NT$ 130
Dinner purchase at a resupply stop:
- 2 packs of microwaved rice (700 kcal) + 2 cans of tuna (300) + cheese slices (200) + nuts (580) = 1,780 kcal, NT$ 200
Handling Mountain Sections Without Resupply Points
If there’s a stretch of 100 km or more with no resupply, you must buy the night before:
- 2 packs of vacuum-packed noodles (700 kcal)
- 1 can of canned main dish (400 kcal)
- 6 energy bars (1,500 kcal)
- Nuts 200g (1,160 kcal)
- Chocolate 100g (540 kcal)
- Protein powder 60g (240 kcal)
- Instant oats 100g (380 kcal)
Total weight roughly 1.3 kg, providing 5,000 kcal, enough for one day plus an emergency reserve.
Pairing Calories with Water
Sports drink powder is a bikepacking godsend:
- Tailwind or domestic sports drink powder: 200 kcal per pack + electrolytes
- Add 1-2 packs to 1L of water, adding 200-400 kcal
- Negligible weight gain (60-80g of powder)
Strategy: Put sports drink in your hydration bladder and plain water in your bottles, using them separately.
Common Mistakes
- Carrying too much fresh produce: Too much water weight, low calorie density
- Not carrying fats: A carb-dominant diet leads to blood sugar crashes; you need 30% of energy from fat
- Relying on energy gels: Too much sugar can upset your stomach; no more than 6 packs per day
- No protein planning: Needed for muscle repair; 60-80g of protein per day
