What is RPE?
RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion) was proposed by Swedish psychologist Gunnar Borg in the 1960s. - Uphill sections: allow pace to drop, but keep RPE unchanged
- Excessive temperatures: lower RPE to 4–5 and proactively slow down to stay safe
- Gastrointestinal discomfort: RPE may become unreliable; switch to conservative heart-rate pacing instead
Practical Recommendations
- In daily training, use RPE as the primary metric for at least 30% of your mileage (without looking at pace) to develop body awareness
- In the month before a race, do several “RPE marathon-pace runs” (10–15km) to confirm the actual pace corresponding to your RPE 5–6
- After a race, record your RPE for each segment as a reference for your next race pacing plan
- RPE cannot replace heart rate or power meters; instead, use it as a supplementary validation tool. Combining all three is ideal.
