Step 2: Apply the Activity Factor

The activity factor reflects the multiplier effect of daily life and exercise on energy expenditure:

Running Calorie Expenditure Estimate:

  • Rough formula: weight (kg) × distance (km) × 1 kcal (flat terrain)
  • With incline adjustment: each 1% incline increases expenditure by approximately 5–8%
  • Interval running burns approximately 15–20% more than jogging the same distance

  3. Only calculating running and ignoring supplementary training: Strength training, yoga, and cycling cross-training should all be included in the calculation
  4. Over-relying on GPS watch calorie data: Calorie estimates from commercially available wearable devices can have errors of up to 20–30%; use them as reference only

  • Reassess your TDEE every 4–6 weeks, especially when training volume changes significantly
  • Monitor the “weekly average weight” rather than daily weight; errors from water fluctuation can be as high as 1–2 kg
