Taitung Railway Bicycle Path: A Leisurely Ride and Food Stops Along a Scenic Route
Introduction
Not every ride needs to push your limits. The Taitung Railway Bicycle Path taught me that cycling can also be a way to savor slow time. This bike route, built along the abandoned tracks of the old Taitung Line, stretches from Luye Highlands to Guanshan, covering about 40 kilometers in total. It winds through valley farmland, rice paddies, and small towns, making it one of Taiwan’s most suitable routes for families and casual travelers.
I went with my wife, who isn’t an avid cyclist, but this route had her smiling from start to finish. She even said, “I want to come back again.”
Route Overview
The Taitung Longitudinal Valley Bicycle Path has several main sections, with the most classic being:
| Section | Distance | Terrain | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luye Highlands → Luye Township | 8km | Mostly downhill | Hot air balloon launch pad, Luye Highlands views |
| Luye → Chishang | 18km | Flat | Brown’s Boulevard turnoff, valley farmland scenery |
| Chishang → Guanshan | 14km | Flat | Guanshan Ring Town Bicycle Path, Guanshan rice |
The entire route has almost no significant climbing; the biggest challenge comes from the southeast monsoon, but since riding speeds are slow, wind resistance isn’t much of an issue. It’s very suitable for family outings or beginner cyclists.
The Right Way to Ride the Taitung Railway Bicycle Path
The biggest problem with the Taitung Railway Bicycle Path is that many people “ride too fast.” This isn’t a racing route—you should slow down and give your eyes time to take in every detail:
Places worth stopping at:
- Luye Highlands: The site of Taiwan’s most famous hot air balloon festival. Even outside the balloon season, the panoramic valley views from the highlands are well worth a stop.
- Dianguang Tribe: A Bunun tribe settlement between Luye and Guanshan, featuring traditional bamboo houses and handicrafts.
- Brown’s Boulevard Entrance: Chishang’s famous single-lane rice field road. Bicycle access is restricted, but the photo opportunities at the entrance are stunning.
- Guanshan Ring Town Bicycle Path: A dedicated 12-kilometer loop around the town, completely free from motor vehicle traffic and quite comfortable.
Food and supply map:
The food density in the Taitung Longitudinal Valley is surprisingly high. Here are our recommendations from what we actually tried:
- Luye: Freshly cooked soy milk and fried sweet potatoes at the Luye Market—the best fuel for an early morning departure.
- Chishang: Chishang bento boxes (with Wu-Tau Chishang Rice Lunchbox as the representative) are an unmissable local specialty. We recommend having lunch in Chishang.
- Guanshan: Guanshan pork blood soup and Guanshan rice cake. The food stalls at Guanshan Market offer the most authentic taste of Taitung daily life.
Bike Rental and Gear
The Taitung Railway Bicycle Path doesn’t require high-end equipment, but some basic preparation is still necessary:
Rental tips:
- Both Luye and Guanshan offer bicycle rental services, and some operators provide “rent here, return there” options.
- Choose a leisure bike with fenders and a kickstand—more suitable for this route than a racing road bike.
- Electric-assist bicycles are a great choice for those with children or limited stamina; the valley route doesn’t drain much battery.
Gear checklist:
- Sunscreen (Taitung has strong sunlight, and the valley offers almost no shade)
- Water bottle (at least 1.5 liters)
- Light long-sleeve cycling jersey (for sun protection and to handle the evening temperature drop)
- Phone mount (this route has many spots worth photographing)
- Cash (many small shops in the valley don’t accept credit cards)
The Rhythm of the Taitung Longitudinal Valley
What I remember most about cycling in Taitung isn’t any single scenic spot—it’s the rhythm. The valley’s farmland sways gently in the wind, the Central Mountain Range and Coastal Mountain Range stand on either side in the distance, and blue skies and white clouds reflect in the paddy fields—riding through scenery like this makes all the tension and worries of Taipei feel far away.
One afternoon, we stopped by the roadside next to a rice field. We did nothing at all—just sat on the field ridge, eating the grass jelly we’d bought in Guanshan, watching cloud shadows drift across the paddies. Those fifteen minutes were probably the most worthwhile part of the entire trip.
Guanshan Night Market: The Perfect Ending After Your Ride
If your itinerary ends after sunset in Guanshan, the Guanshan Night Market is a great way to wrap up. It’s not large, but it has a good variety of local Taitung snacks:
- Guanshan stinky tofu
- Freshly blended papaya milk
- BBQ stalls (Taitung’s barbecue sauce has a distinctive flavor worth trying)
- Traditional tapioca pearl ice
Practical Tips
- The best time to go is autumn and winter (October to February), when the golden rice waves are at their most beautiful.
- If you’re visiting during the Chishang Autumn Harvest Rice Art Festival, book accommodation well in advance—nearby lodging is extremely hard to find.
- Set off in the morning, complete the main sections before noon, and spend the afternoon leisurely exploring the towns.
- Bring a book or sketching supplies—the valley’s tranquil atmosphere is perfect for slow, idle moments.
Conclusion
The Taitung Railway Bicycle Path made me rethink what cycling means. Not every ride needs a challenge goal, and not every pedal stroke needs to be measured in watts. Sometimes, cycling is simply a way to slow down and see the world more clearly.
The valley scenery isn’t going anywhere, but your mood will change depending on the time you give it. Next time you’re in Taitung, put the bike path on your itinerary—you’ll thank yourself.
