Night Riding Safety Guide: Gear Selection, Route Planning, and Essential Tips

挑戰心得

Why Choose Night Riding?

Summer daytime temperatures in Taiwan often exceed 35°C, so many cyclists choose to ride in the early evening or at night to avoid the heat. In addition, urban commuters often ride at night after work. However, the risks of night riding are significantly higher than daytime riding, so being well-prepared is essential.

Risks of Night Riding

  1. Reduced visibility: Motorists have a harder time seeing you
  2. Difficulty reading the road surface: Potholes, gravel, and water stains are harder to spot
  3. Animal activity: Stray dogs are more active at night
  4. Impaired judgment: Fatigue combined with visual limitations

Essential Lighting Equipment

Front Light Selection

Lumens Suitable Scenarios Battery Life
200-400 Urban areas with streetlights 3-5 hours
400-800 Suburban mixed roads 2-4 hours
800-1600 Mountain roads without streetlights 1.5-3 hours
1600+ High-speed descents/off-road 1-2 hours

Buying tips:

  • Beam angle: A wider beam pattern is safer than a focused spot
  • Water resistance rating: At least IPX4
  • Charging method: USB-C charging is the most convenient
  • Mounting system: Quick-release designs make it easy to remove

Rear Light Selection

The rear light is the most important piece of equipment for making yourself visible to others:

  • Brightness of at least 50 lumens or more
  • Choose a flashing mode (more noticeable than steady-on)
  • Recommended mounting on the seatpost or the back of the helmet
  • Some rear lights feature brake-sensing functionality

Reflective Gear

  • Reflective vest: The simplest and most effective option
  • Reflective stickers: Apply to the frame, wheels, and helmet
  • Reflective ankle bands: The up-and-down motion of your feet is especially noticeable
  • Reflective jerseys: Night-specific jerseys feature large areas of reflective material

Route Selection Principles

  1. Prioritize sections with streetlights
  2. Avoid provincial highways with heavy traffic
  3. Riverside bike paths are the top choice (Taipei/New Taipei/Taichung/Kaohsiung)
  4. Avoid unfamiliar routes
  5. Stick to flat roads and avoid high-speed descents

Safe Riding Guidelines

  1. Reduce speed: At night, keep your maximum speed to 70-80% of your daytime pace
  2. Increase following distance: Keep more space between you and the rider ahead
  3. Brake earlier: Slow down sooner when you spot obstacles
  4. Wear bright clothing: Avoid wearing all black
  5. Ride with others: Try not to ride alone at night
  6. Inform your family: Tell them your route and estimated time of return before heading out
  7. Keep your phone charged: So you can call for help in an emergency
  8. Carry identification: In case of an accident

Night Riding Glasses

  • Clear lenses: Designed specifically for nighttime
  • Yellow lenses: Increase contrast and improve vision
  • Photochromic lenses: Can be used from daytime into the night
  • Never wear dark lenses when riding at night

Common Causes of Night Riding Accidents

  1. Being rear-ended by a car because no bike light was installed (most common)
  2. Crashes from failing to notice potholes in the road
  3. Head-on collisions from riding against traffic
  4. Crashes caused by being startled by chasing stray dogs
  5. Lack of focus due to fatigue

Emergency Response

  • Carry an elastic bandage and adhesive bandages
  • Save emergency contacts on your phone
  • Know the location of the nearest hospital
  • If your bike breaks down, don’t wait in a dark spot—move to a well-lit area
