Section Analysis

Yilan to Tuchang (0-40K)

Starting from downtown Yilan, follow Provincial Highway 7 (the Yilan section of the North Cross-Island Highway). This stretch generally climbs alongside the Lanyang River valley with a gentle gradient (1-3%), passing through Yuanshan and Datong Township along the way.

Things to note:

  • Traffic is heavier on weekends and holidays
  • The gradient becomes noticeably steeper after Niudou Bridge
  • Tuchang is the last place with shops

Tuchang to Taipingshan (40-55K)

This is where the real climbing begins, with the gradient increasing significantly (4-8%). This is both the toughest and the most rewarding section of the entire route.

Section highlights:

  • Passes through forest belts at different elevations
  • Clouds and mist frequently drift through the mountains
  • You may encounter Formosan macaques and Mikado pheasants
  • Road surface quality is good, but there are many curves

Best Time to Ride

  • Best months: March-May, October-November
  • Times to avoid: typhoon season (July-September), cold fronts
  • Recommended start time: 5:30-6:00 AM (to reach the summit before noon)

Difficulty Assessment

Compared with other well-known Taiwanese climbs:

Route Distance Elevation Gain Difficulty
Wuling (West Approach) 55K 2,700m ★★★★★
Taipingshan 55K 2,000m ★★★★
Alishan 75K 2,200m ★★★★
Hehuanshan (East Approach) 80K 2,700m ★★★★★

Gear Recommendations

  • Gear ratio: 34/28 or lighter is recommended
  • Windbreaker: The summit can be 12-15°C colder than the plains
  • Water bottles: Carry two — there is no resupply after Tuchang
  • Bike lights: Some sections pass through short tunnels
  • Gloves: Full-finger gloves are needed for the descent

Resupply Plan

Location Distance Available Supplies
Yilan City 0K Full resupply
Yuanshan 10K Convenience store
Datong Township 25K Small shop
Tuchang 40K Last shop
Taipingshan Lodge 55K Restaurant, vending machines

Once you reach Taipingshan, if you plan to stay overnight, consider:

  1. Jianqing Historic Trail: One of the 28 most beautiful trails in the world
  2. Cuifeng Lake: Taiwan’s largest alpine lake
  3. Jiuzhize Hot Spring: A soak after the ride is incredibly soothing
  4. Taipingshan Sunrise: The sea-of-clouds view at dawn

Descent Route

Riding back the way you came is the safest option. Notes for the descent:

  • Takes about 1.5-2 hours in total
  • Temperature will gradually rise
  • Stay alert and avoid losing focus
  • Slow down before every curve

Taipingshan is a climb with moderate difficulty but top-tier scenery — especially recommended for riders who want to “test the waters” before taking on Wuling.
