Common Mistakes in Imagery Training
- Only imagining success, not difficulty: Purely positive imagery can lead to underestimating challenges; it should be paired with coping imagery
- Going too fast: Imagery should be synchronized with actual pace—imagining 1 kilometer at 5:00/km should take about 5 minutes
- Lack of consistency: Occasional practice has limited effect; aim for at least 3 sessions per week, 5–15 minutes each
- Environmental distractions: Practice in a quiet environment initially, and only gradually introduce distractions once you’re proficient (because race day is noisy)
Practical Tips
- Keep an “imagery journal”: after each session, record the vividness of your imagery (1–10 scale) and your emotional response
