Tour de France Tactics Analysis: Team Strategy from Pace-Setting to Final Sprint
The Tour de France is the highest echelon of road cycling. The three-week event every July not only tests individual riders’ abilities but is also the ultimate contest of team tactics. How an eight-rider team maneuvers across 21 stages and more than 3,400 kilometers determines who ultimately takes home the yellow jersey.
Team Role Division: The Eight-Rider Chess Game
The eight riders of a professional team each have their own duties, forming a precise tactical system:
GC Rider
The core of the entire team, aiming to compete for the yellow jersey. Typical characteristics include both climbing and time trial ability, with FTP usually reaching 6.2-6.5 W/kg. Pogačar’s all-around strength shown at the 2024 Tour, for example, saw him sustain over 6.8 W/kg for 30 minutes on mountain stages.
Mountain Domestique
Controls the pace and filters the group for the team leader on high mountain stages. Typically 2-3 mountain domestiques are needed to rotate at high speed in the final 10-15 kilometers. Visma-Lease a Bike’s mountain train at the 2024 Tour was a textbook example, using domestiques like Kuss and Jorgenson in relay pace-setting on the Col du Galibier to whittle the main group from 50 riders down to fewer than 15.
Flat Domestique
Responsible for controlling the pace of the group on flat stages and chasing down breakaways. They are usually heavier (75-85 kg) and can sustain cruising speeds of 45-48 km/h on flat roads for hours.
Sprinter
Born for flat-stage final sprints, capable of peak power output of 1,600-1,900 watts. Jasper Philipsen’s peak sprint power at the 2024 Tour reached 1,842 watts, sustained for approximately 12 seconds.
Lead-out Train
Opens the path for the sprinter in the final 3-5 kilometers, usually composed of 2-3 riders. An ideal lead-out train maintains 60-65 km/h in the final kilometer, allowing the sprinter to launch the attack in the last 200 meters.

Pace Control Tactics
The most common mountain tactic is for domestiques to set a high tempo at the start of the climb, with three purposes:
- Exhaust opponents’ domestiques: Force other teams to use up their mountain domestiques early

- Protect the team leader: Allow the GC rider to save his own effort until the crucial final moments

Timing of Attacks
The timing of an attack by top GC riders is crucial. At Stage 15 of the 2024 Tour to Plateau de Beille, Pogačar chose to attack with 7.5 kilometers remaining, when all of his opponents’ domestiques had already been dropped, leaving them to fight alone. On this attack he climbed for approximately 25 minutes at 6.92 W/kg, ultimately opening a gap of over one minute.
Descent Tactics
Descents are not just recovery time—they are a tactical tool. Technically skilled riders can open gaps or regain time on descents. Key elements include:
- Line choice: The classic outside-inside-outside line through corners to minimize braking
- Weight control: Shifting body weight back behind the saddle
- Aerodynamic position: Adopting the Super Tuck or similar low-drag positions on straight sections
Time Trial Strategy: A Duel Against the Clock
The Tour usually includes 1-2 individual time trial (ITT) stages, totaling 40-60 kilometers, with significant impact on the general classification.
Pacing Strategy
Professional riders adopt a “negative split” pacing strategy in time trials, riding slightly below threshold power in the first half and gradually accelerating in the second half:
- First 1/3: 95-98% of FTP, establishing a steady rhythm
- Middle 1/3: 100-103% of FTP
- Final 1/3: 103-108% of FTP, going all out

Crosswind Tactics
Crosswinds are the most devastating weapon on flat stages. When the wind hits the road at a 30-60 degree angle, strong teams will form an “echelon” at the front of the group, using the crosswind to split the peloton. The crosswind section of Stage 11 at the 2024 Tour caused multiple GC riders to lose contact, costing them dozens of seconds or even minutes.
