Repeatedly breaking down at the same spot means it’s your systemic weakness—whether it’s the ceiling of your aerobic endurance, a fixed gap in your fueling schedule, or a pacing strategy that always overdraws at the same point. Compare trends across multiple races, focus your training on that specific point, and breakthroughs often come quickly.

I often tell athletes this: In endurance sports, no path is wasted, and no suffering is in vain—including that DNF that broke your heart.

That athlete who crouched by the aid station and texted me asking, “Am I just not cut out for this sport?” later used this method to rebuild his pacing and fueling from scratch.
