Why Do You Need Race Simulation Training?
You can have a world-class FTP and VO2max, but without the experience of applying these abilities in a race context, it’s like having a sharp sword but no swordsmanship. The purpose of Race Simulation Training is:
- Practice pacing strategies: Hone your pacing judgment in an environment close to race intensity
- Train energy management: Learn when to hold back and when to go all-in
- Simulate fatigue-based decision making: Make correct tactical choices even when your body is fatigued
- Build race confidence: Experience race-level suffering in advance to reduce race-day anxiety
- Test fueling strategies: Validate your nutrition plan in an environment close to racing
Core Principles of Race Simulation Training
Principle 1: Recreate the Race Intensity Distribution
The power distribution of a race is vastly different from steady interval training. A road race may include:
- 60% of the time in Zone 2 (group cruising)
- 15% of the time in Zone 3-4 (position fighting, gradual climbs)
- 15% of the time in Zone 5-6 (climbing, breakaways, chasing back)
- 10% of the time in Zone 6-7 (sprints, attacks)
Principle 2: Incorporate Unpredictability
No one will tell you “your next interval starts in 3 minutes” during a race. Race simulation training should include random elements—varying intensity based on terrain, wind, or preset “race events.”
