The 2019 Tour of California: How a 20-Year-Old Pogačar Foreshadowed Everything That Came Later

The 20-Year-Old Kid in 2019

In every narrative about Tadej Pogačar, 2019 is often skipped. People prefer to start directly from 2020, that stunning debut where he took the Tour de France overall title, the mountains classification, and the best young rider award all at once.

But if you want to know “why 2020 happened,” the 2019 Tour of California is the foreshadowing that was never fully told.

That year he was 20, won the Tour of California overall, and became the youngest UCI WorldTour stage race winner in history.

What “Youngest WorldTour Overall Winner” Actually Means

The UCI WorldTour is the highest level of professional road cycling. At this level, winning an overall classification in a stage race is not something you can steal with one good day—you must stay with the front group on mountain stages, not bleed time in time trials, defend seconds in the final days, and have a team willing to work for you.

For a 20-year-old rider, the biggest problems are usually not about ability, but three other things:

  1. Experience: Every decisive moment in a stage race is hidden in unremarkable places; young riders often spend their energy in the wrong spots.
  2. Recovery: Finishing one day is just the beginning; you have to do it again the next day. Explosiveness is rarely a young rider’s problem—recovery rhythm is.
  3. Positioning: Fighting for the right position in the peloton is an instinct that takes time to accumulate.

A 20-year-old winning the overall at this level means he is already beyond his years in all three areas. This is not a signal of “potential stock”—it is a signal that “he has already arrived.”

The 2019 Entry Foretold Everything That Came Later

Looking back, the 2019 Tour of California told us at least three things in advance:

One: He Is Not a Pure Climber—He Is an Overall-Classification Rider

Winning the general classification of a stage race is different from winning a mountain-top stage. The former requires you to have no major gaps on every single day of the race. This was repeatedly proven later: he didn’t just win the Tour de France, he also won the Giro d’Italia; he didn’t just win three-week Grand Tours, he also won one-day Monuments.

Two: He Can Win in Unfamiliar Environments

The Tour of California is not in Europe. For a young European rider, racing on another continent means jet lag, road conditions, climate, and peloton habits are all different. Winning under these conditions usually means his adaptability is stronger than his peers.

Three: He Does Not Need to “Wait His Turn”

Traditionally, young riders spend years as domestiques—working, learning, waiting for the team leader to retire. Pogačar simply took the overall title at 20. This trajectory foreshadowed the very distinctive style that came later: don’t wait, don’t over-calculate, attack when you see an opportunity.

The Roadmap from 2019 to Now

Year Milestone
2018 Tour de l’Avenir overall champion
2019 Tour of California overall champion, youngest UCI WorldTour overall winner in history (age 20)
2020 Won the Tour de France on first attempt, also taking the mountains classification and best young rider
2021 Second consecutive Tour de France title, again sweeping all three jerseys
2024 Giro d’Italia + Tour de France + World Championship road race “Triple Crown,” only the 3rd in history
2025 Defended both the Tour de France and World Championship in the same year, first in history
2026 5th Tour de France overall title, joining the five-title club tied for most all-time

Spread this table out and 2019 is not an isolated surprise, but a very natural point on an upward curve. What is truly astonishing is this: that curve never stopped afterward.

A Reference for Young Taiwanese Riders

Young riders in Taiwan often face a practical question: when should you “go up and try,” and when should you “wait one more year.” Pogačar’s 2019 example is of course an extreme case and cannot be applied directly, but two concepts are still worth considering:

  • Winning at a level where you can win is more valuable than riding along at a level where you cannot. First accumulate “how to win” experience at a level where you can compete, then move up—this is often more helpful than finishing at the back all the way up.
  • Stage racing is a test of recovery. If you find yourself strong on day one and fading by day two, what you need to train is not maximum power, but nutrition, sleep, and post-training recovery routines.

These are general observations; actual planning should be done progressively according to individual conditions and coach recommendations.

Summary

The 2020 Tour de France introduced Pogačar to the world, but the real trailer was the 2019 Tour of California. A 20-year-old winning the overall at the WorldTour level had already told the entire story of the next six or seven years, it’s just that not many people believed the script could be written that extravagantly.
