Packing for Bicycle Touring: The Ultimate Long-Distance Gear List

Long-distance bicycle touring is a unique way to travel. You carry everything you need for daily life and, pedal stroke by pedal stroke, trace a new line across the map each day. But if your luggage is too heavy, the trip turns into torture; too light, and you may find yourself in trouble in the mountains or bad weather. This article shares how to find that “just right” balance.

Touring Gear Philosophy: Lighter Is Better, But Not Too Light

Veteran bicycle tourers have a saying: “Every kilogram of luggage becomes ten times the burden on a climb on day five.”

The general recommendation is to keep touring luggage (not including the bike itself) under 10–15 kilograms. Beyond this weight, the impact on riding efficiency becomes very noticeable, especially on climbs.

Luggage Configuration Systems

Pannier System

This is the traditional standard setup for bicycle touring:

  • Front Panniers: About 10–20 liters, for lighter clothing items
  • Rear Panniers: About 20–40 liters, for heavier items
  • Handlebar Bag: 1–10 liters, for items you need close at hand (maps, snacks, camera)
  • Saddle Bag: Small repair tools

Bikepacking (Lightweight System)

A popular approach in recent years, doing away with front and rear racks in favor of specially designed bags mounted directly to the frame and body of the bike, resulting in a lower center of gravity and less air resistance.

  • Frame Bag: For tools and supplies
  • Handlebar Roll/Bag: For a tent or sleeping bag
  • Seat Bag: For clothing and personal items

  • Travel-size shampoo and body wash (small bottles or solid soap)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Microfiber quick-dry towel

First Aid

  • Personal medication (pain relievers, stomach medicine, electrolyte tablets)

Special Tips for Cycling Around Taiwan

Circling Taiwan by bike (roughly 900–1,100 kilometers) is the most popular local touring route, and there are a few special considerations:

  1. Abundant convenience store resupply: Taiwan has one of the highest densities of 7-Eleven and FamilyMart stores in the world, so you can rely on them almost entirely for basic food supplies and don’t need to carry much food
  2. Dense homestays and hotels: Unless you’re tackling a wilderness route, you can skip the tent and significantly cut down on weight
  3. Intense summer sun: Sunscreen, sun sleeves, and a helmet visor are essential
  4. Typhoons in the east: If circling the island between July and October, keep a close eye on the weather and have a flexible backup plan

The Final Packing Step: Test Ride and Adjust

Once packed, be sure to do a full 10–20 km test ride the day before departure to feel how the load affects handling:

  • Front-to-rear weight balance: a ratio of roughly 40:60 is recommended
  • Place high-center-of-gravity items (tent, sleeping bag) in lower positions
  • Keep frequently used items (phone, wallet, snacks) in the most accessible spots

A well-packed bicycle tour lets you ride light and immerse yourself in the scenery that changes every day, instead of being weighed down by heavy luggage. Enjoy the preparation process — it’s part of the journey itself.
