Common Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Going Out Too Fast

The road from Shuili to Xinyi is nearly flat, tempting riders to push hard early. But the following 45 km of continuous climbing will punish that early effort tenfold.

Pitfall 2: Insufficient Fueling

Aid stations on the Tataka course are sparser than on Wuling. Many riders assume they can “just buy something at a shop,” only to find there is no commercial support for 20 km past Shenmu.

Pitfall 3: Underestimating the Weather

April can bring rain, and by October it’s already cool. Without warm clothing, the descent can lead to hypothermia.

Pitfall 4: Ignoring Cadence

On 70 km of sustained climbing, too low a cadence (<65 rpm) will burn out your legs in the later stages. Aim to maintain 75–80 rpm.

Pitfall 5: Underestimating the Descent

The climb is hard but stable; the 60 km descent that follows, combined with fatigue, is where most accidents happen. Slow down and ride cautiously.

Shuili

  • Shuili Farmers’ Association Lodge: Affordable and convenient
  • Guesthouses near Shuili Train Station: NT$1,000–2,500
  • Sun Moon Lake accommodations: A bit farther but a pleasant option

Getting There

Driving

  • Taichung → Shuili: 1.5–2 hours (via National Freeway 3)
  • Parking: Shuili Township Office and public parking lots
  • Recommended to arrive the day before the race

Public Transportation

  • Taiwan Railway’s Jiji Branch Line to Shuili Station
  • Riders from other counties will need to transfer

Conclusion

The Chong Yueh Tataka is a classic mid-altitude climbing race in Taiwan. Work through this checklist step by step, and your first — or fifteenth — Tataka challenge will go smoothly. Standing under the finish arch at the Tataka Visitor Center, you’ll know: those 70 km of perseverance were worth remembering for a lifetime.
