Without a “Goal Race,” Effort Goes Nowhere
The most common problem for amateur athletes isn’t a lack of effort—it’s “effort without direction.” Training at roughly the same intensity day after day, and a year later, performance is still stuck in place. The difference between pros and top amateurs often comes down to this: the entire year is designed around one or two goal races.
Why You Need an A-Priority Goal Race
Setting an “A-priority goal race” (the one you most want to perform well in) answers every training question: what to train now, at what intensity, when to taper, and when to go all out. Without it, every workout lacks the coordinates of “why am I training.”
Race Categorization
| Level | Role | How to Handle |
|---|---|---|
| A-priority | Most important race of the year, full preparation | The entire annual cycle revolves around it, with a full taper beforehand |
| B-priority | Important but not the top priority | Moderate preparation; can serve as a tune-up |
| C-priority | Part of training | No special taper; treat as a high-intensity workout |
Limit A-priority races to no more than one or two per year—too many goals equals no goals.
The Skeleton of an Annual Cycle
Working backward from one A-priority race, here’s a typical framework:
| Phase | Focus | Concept |
|---|---|---|
| Base Phase | High volume aerobic work, strength, technique | Lay the foundation; don’t chase speed |
| Build Phase | Gradually increasing intensity, sport-specific work | Convert the foundation into event-specific ability |
| Peak/Taper Phase | Maintain intensity, sharply reduce volume | Shed fatigue, let form emerge |
| Race Phase | A-priority race, perform | Cash in the entire year |
| Transition/Off-Season | Active recovery, mental recharge | Prevent burnout, recharge for the next cycle |
The Two Most Counterintuitive—Yet Most Critical—Things
1. Hold Back During the Base Phase
The base phase should be boringly stacking aerobic work and strength, but many can’t resist pushing intensity every day, leaving no room for progress in the build phase and arriving at the peak phase already overtrained. If the foundation is shaky, everything else collapses.
2. Dare to Train Less During the Taper
The pre-race taper is a “deliberate, sharp reduction in training volume while maintaining a small amount of intensity” to let accumulated fatigue fade and adaptations surface. Most people fail because they’re afraid of “not training enough” and keep hammering right before the race—showing up on race day carrying a load of fatigue. Daring to taper is the dividing line between amateurs and top amateurs.
Don’t Forget the Off-Season
An annual plan must include a “transition/off-season”: active recovery, cross-training, and mental downtime. A year-round high-pressure schedule with no off-season is a breeding ground for burnout and chronic injuries. The off-season isn’t wasted time—it’s what allows the next annual cycle to start at all.
Realistic Adjustments for Amateurs
The plan has to accommodate work, family, and the unexpected. The principle: it’s better to flexibly execute a plan with the right direction than to rigidly cling to a “perfect” plan that keeps getting disrupted. Direction and sustainability matter more than precision that falls apart easily.
Design your entire year around one race, and every workout takes on meaning. The person who scatters shots everywhere trains for ten years and stays in place; the person with a cycle and a direction can see, within one year, that they are genuinely different.
