Introduction
Elite IRONMAN athletes don’t just focus on a single race—they structure their entire year around A/B/C races. This approach not only improves performance but also reduces the risk of injury and overtraining. This article teaches you how to plan your own triathlon season.
A/B/C Race Definitions
- A Race: 1-2 most important races of the year, with full taper and peak, typically full IRONMAN distance
- B Race: 2-4 races per year, with partial reduction in training volume, used as training tests (70.3, Olympic)
- C Race: 3-6 races per year, no taper, purely for mental conditioning (Olympic, sprint, 5km TT)
Season Planning Example (October IRONMAN Taiwan as A Race)
| Month | Training Focus | Race Level |
|---|---|---|
| Jan-Feb | Transition + Base | - |
| Mar-Apr | Base Period | C - Half Marathon/Olympic |
| May-Jun | Build Period | B - Spring 70.3 |
| Jul | End of Build | B - Summer 70.3 |
| Aug-Sep | Peak + Taper | B - 70.3 / C Short Distance |
| Oct | IRONMAN Taiwan | A Race |
| Nov-Dec | Recovery + Transition | C - Festival Races |
A Race Selection Principles
Course matches your goals, season suits you, registration completed 6-12 months in advance, travel arrangements already made, and budget allows.
Multi-Season Planning (3-5 Years)
- Year 1: Challenge Taiwan, goal to finish
- Year 2: Taiwan/Malaysia, goal sub-12 or sub-11
- Year 3: Florida/Arizona, goal sub-10 or Kona Qualify
- Year 4: Kona (if Qualified) or Nice, enjoy the top stage
- Year 5: Lanzarote, Mont-Tremblant, travel + maintain performance
Why Can’t Every Race Be an A Race?
Performance drops 2-3 weeks after peaking, high psychological stress, accumulated injuries, and impact on family plans. Maximum 1-2 A Races per year.
Season Density
- Beginner 2-3 races: newcomers, family-first athletes
- Standard 4-6 races: advanced amateurs
- High density 6-10 races: elite amateurs
- Professional 8-12 races: PRO athletes
Registration Strategy
Book A Races 1 year in advance, B Races 4-6 months in advance, C Races 1-3 months in advance, and coordinate travel arrangements with family.
Practical Advice
- Use Excel to plan the entire year, review and adjust each quarter
- Keep 1-2 months of buffer for injuries or changes
- Join triathlon clubs for group registration
- Schedule a family trip at season’s end as a reward
- Don’t add a new A Race every year—give yourself a down year
Conclusion
IRONMAN is not a single one-off event each year, but “a lifestyle sustained over many years.” Through A/B/C race planning, you can give your season rhythm, anticipation, and flexibility. A triathlete who can race for 5 or 10 years is far happier than one who burns out in a single year. Make IRONMAN a lifelong sport, with new goals waiting for you every year.
