How to Prepare for the Grand Slam

Physical Preparation

Completing the Grand Slam requires strong climbing ability and long-distance endurance. Recommendations:

  • FTP threshold: At least 3.0 W/kg or higher
  • Long-distance adaptation: Able to comfortably complete a single-day ride of 150K or more
  • Climbing training: At least 2 climbing sessions per week, accumulating 1,500m+ of elevation gain

Equipment Preparation

  • Gear ratio: A 34/32 or lighter gear ratio is recommended
  • Wheelset: Choose a lightweight climbing wheelset (under 1,400g)
  • Nutrition: Bring enough energy gels and electrolytes

Registration Information

  • Registration usually opens at the start of the year
  • Student discount program: The student support program sponsored by Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大) offers free entry spots
  • Completing all stages earns you a Grand Slam medal

Race Strategy Tips

  1. Pacing is key: Don’t burn out in the first half — save your strength for the climbs in the second half
  2. Make use of aid stations: Take full advantage of the official aid stations — don’t skip any of them
  3. Weather preparedness: Mountain weather is highly changeable, so carry a lightweight rain jacket
  4. Mental preparation: Set reasonable goals — enjoying the process matters more than chasing a result

This series is the annual flagship event for Taiwan’s mountain-climbing cyclists. Completing the Grand Slam is not only proof of physical fitness, but also a profound experience of the beauty of Taiwan’s mountains.
