
Why Periodized Training Is the Dividing Line for Advanced Triathletes
When you first start triathlon, everyone follows the same pattern: “swim 3 times, bike 2 times, and run 3 times every week.” But once you’ve been training for more than 2 years, this “evenly distributed” approach hits a plateau. Periodization is the core methodology that takes you from merely finishing races to chasing PBs.
The Four Phases of Annual Periodization
1. Base Period — 12-16 Weeks
The goal of the base period is to build aerobic foundation and muscular endurance, accounting for 40-45% of the annual training volume.

Key Principle: During the base period, more than 80% of training is below Z2 — this is the essence of Polarized Training. Time spent above Z3 heart rate should not exceed 30 minutes per week.
2. Build Period — 8-12 Weeks
The build period introduces race-intensity specific training. Training volume increases by 15-20% compared to the base period, but the intensity range expands to Z3-Z4.
- Sweet Spot Cycling: FTP 88-93% × 3 × 15 minutes
- Threshold Run: 5K pace × 4 × 1000m
- CSS Swim: 100m fastest pace + 5 seconds × 16 × 100m
During this phase, Brick training must be done once per week to simulate the muscular adaptation of the T2 transition.
3. Peak Period — 4-6 Weeks
The peak period is high-fidelity simulation of race intensity. Total training volume drops by 10%, but intensity rises to Z4-Z5.
- Full race simulations (70.3 distance simulation) scheduled at least 2 times
- VO2max intervals: Z5 × 5 × 5 minutes (cycling)
- Run Tempo: 10K pace × 30-40 minutes
4. Taper Period — 2-3 Weeks
The scientific basis of the taper period is: maintain intensity, cut volume. Research shows the optimal taper follows an exponential reduction curve — a 20% drop in the first 7 days, then another 30% reduction in the second week.

- Weeks 37-40: Recovery Period
- Weeks 41-52: Second Cycle (short cycle preparing for B-priority race)
Three Principles of Advanced Periodization
- 3:1 Microcycle: Accumulate training for 3 weeks, then reduce volume by 30% in the 4th week
- Intensity and volume must not spike simultaneously: If volume increases this week, do not increase intensity
- Only 2 A-priority races per year: All others are B/C-priority training races
