Imagine you have already run through every possible scenario that could go wrong in your training: your pace is a minute slower than expected, the weather suddenly turns hot, a drink bottle at an aid station is blown over by the wind, and your shoelaces come undone at the 20-kilometer mark.
When these things actually happen during a race, your body and brain have a familiar memory: “I’ve practiced this. I know how to handle it.”
This is the core concept of Stress Inoculation Training (SIT). This method originates from the research of clinical psychologist Donald Meichenbaum and was initially used to help soldiers and emergency responders maintain function under high-pressure situations. In recent years, sports psychologists have begun systematically applying it to training design for endurance sports.
The Three Phases of SIT

SIT workout design: In the latter half of a long run, deliberately shift to a pace 30–40 seconds slower than your target, while practicing the mental strategy of “accept and adjust” rather than stopping in frustration. The goal is to get your body and brain used to the idea that “an unplanned slowdown does not equal failure.”
Adversity 2: Bad Weather
Race scenario: The Taipei Marathon encounters the northeast monsoon—cold, damp, with strong headwinds.
SIT workout design: Deliberately choose days with bad weather for key workouts (long runs in the rain, intervals in the heat). The point is not to make yourself suffer, but to build an experiential memory of “maintaining performance in discomfort.”
Summer training in Taiwan (June–September) is itself a natural heat-environment SIT. Many runners targeting fall and winter marathons find that the training they gritted through in summer gives them more confidence when facing difficulties in a race.
Adversity 3: The Psychological Blow of Being Passed by a Competitor
Race scenario: A competitor in your target group passes you at 35 kilometers, and you begin to doubt your pacing strategy.
SIT workout design: During group training with your running community, deliberately let a slightly stronger runner pass you, and practice maintaining your own rhythm (rather than surging to follow). This seemingly simple drill has significantly helped many runners maintain pace stability during races.
Adversity 4: Misinterpreting Body Signals
Race scenario: At 20 kilometers, your legs begin to feel heavy, and your brain interprets it as “I’m so exhausted I’m about to fall apart.”
SIT workout design: In the 18th–22nd kilometer of a long run (the zone where fatigue has appeared but collapse has not yet occurred), add 3–5 surges of 200 meters, teaching your body: “I can still briefly pick up the pace when fatigued. This feeling is not collapse; it’s normal fatigue.”
Designing Your “Adversity Workout Checklist”
Here is a set of SIT workout design principles for Taiwanese runners to reference:
- At least 1 “simulated difficulty” long run per month: Deliberately choose challenging conditions (terrain, weather, time of day)
- Add “mental challenge segments” to interval training: Deliberately run the last 2 reps at a faster pace than the preceding ones, experiencing what it’s like to speed up while fatigued
- “Imperfect start” rehearsal: Occasionally and deliberately start your training 30 minutes later than planned, practicing execution under inadequate preparation
- Solo runs vs. social runs ratio: Deliberately schedule some completely solo long runs to strengthen your psychological resources for self-reliance
The Psychological Mechanisms of Stress Inoculation
SIT works through several psychological mechanisms:
- Reduced expectancy effect: When you have already “rehearsed” difficulties in training, the shock response during a race is reduced
- Enhanced self-efficacy: The belief that “I did it in training, so I can do it in the race” is reinforced
- Automation of coping techniques: Using mental techniques under stress requires practice, and SIT provides that practice opportunity
- Improved emotional regulation: Practicing regulation under designed stress is equivalent to “emotional muscle training”
Practical Advice
- Bring SIT thinking into your daily routine: after each training session, record “Where did something unexpected or difficult happen today? How did I respond?”
- Have training partners design “adversity challenges” for each other, such as suddenly changing pace, adding distance requirements, or requiring you to analyze a problem while fatigued
- Stop doing high-stress SIT workouts two weeks before a race, allowing your mind and body to enter the race fully recovered
- Keep records: every time you successfully cope with a training difficulty, mark it in your log, building up a “history of successful coping”
