Elite Athletes' "Rest" Is Not What You Think: Training Load Management and Warning Signs of Overtraining
Tadej Pogačar took his 5th Tour de France title in the 2026 season, won three Monuments, and added the overall titles at the Tour de Romandie and Tour de Suisse. Seeing that kind of race density, many riders’ gut reaction is: “Top pros just train more and rest less than everyone else.”
That gut reaction is wrong.
Professional riders do train an astonishing amount, but they are also the group that recovers most thoroughly. The difference is that amateur riders interpret “rest” as “not riding,” while the professional system treats recovery as a job that needs to be planned, executed, and monitored.
Training Load: Progress Happens During Recovery
Let’s start with a basic model. The logic of training goes like this:
Training stimulus → Fatigue (temporary performance drop) → Recovery → Supercompensation (performance above baseline)
The key point is that getting stronger doesn’t happen while you’re riding; it happens during the recovery process afterward. If you stack the next stimulus before supercompensation occurs, your body can hold up short-term, but long-term it becomes a cycle of accumulating fatigue and declining performance.
In practice, two concepts are used to manage this: acute load (training stress from roughly the last 7 days, representing “how tired you are right now”) and chronic load (the average over roughly the last 6 weeks, representing “how deep your fitness base is”). What you want isn’t to keep acute load permanently low, but to repeatedly create stress within a controllable range, then genuinely digest it.
What Professional Riders Actually Do on “Rest” Days
An amateur rider’s rest day looks something like: no riding, normal work, scrolling on the phone until 1 AM anyway.
A professional rider’s rest day typically includes:

Note the fourth item: active recovery isn’t an easy ride; it’s a “very, very easy” ride. Most amateur riders do their recovery rides at too high an intensity—they see someone on the road and chase, or unconsciously push harder on a small climb. On a true recovery ride, you should finish feeling more energetic than when you left.
An Executable Version for Commuter Riders
You don’t have a team soigneur, but the following costs almost nothing and delivers the highest return:
- Sleep outranks the workout plan. When you can only choose one, choose sleep. High-intensity training on insufficient sleep yields poor adaptation and higher injury risk.
- Eat within 1 hour after training. Carbs + protein. A convenience-store combo is plenty: milk with a banana, or a chicken breast rice ball with unsweetened soy milk.
- Schedule a deload week every 3–4 weeks, cutting training volume to 50%–60% while keeping a little intensity. That week isn’t wasted; it’s what turns the previous three weeks of training into actual fitness.
- Count life stress as training load. Crunching a project deadline, family issues, or consecutive overtime are all stress to the body.
Warning Signs of Overtraining
This is the most important section of this article. Overtraining Syndrome isn’t “being really tired today”; it’s long-term dysfunction, and recovery can take weeks to months.
Before that stage, there’s a phase called “functional overreaching”—short-term performance decline that returns after a few days of rest. That’s a normal part of training. The problem is that many people can’t tell the two apart and push through too hard.
Signals Worth Heeding
Physiological
- Morning resting heart rate is 5–10 beats higher than usual for several consecutive days, or abnormally low instead
- Heart rate variability (HRV) keeps trending down
- At the same intensity, heart rate won’t climb (this is a classic warning sign, often mistaken for “just having an off day”)
- Repeated colds, slower wound healing
- Worse sleep quality—feeling exhausted yet unable to fall asleep
- Noticeable appetite changes, unintentional weight loss
Performance and psychological
- Power keeps dropping at the same perceived effort, and doesn’t return after several days of rest
- High-intensity sessions get progressively harder to complete, with noticeably longer recovery times
- Loss of interest in riding, irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating
Pay special attention to “not improving after rest.” Normal fatigue improves noticeably after 2–3 days of rest; if a week of rest changes nothing, “push through a little longer” is no longer the right approach.
What to Do If These Signs Appear
- Cut training volume significantly first (unless medically advised otherwise, no need to stop completely); switch to low-intensity, short rides
- Check sleep and calorie intake—chronic energy deficiency is a very common root cause
- If symptoms persist beyond 2 weeks, or you experience chest tightness, palpitations, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, or markedly low mood, seek medical attention. Thyroid issues, anemia, infections, and cardiac problems can present similarly to overtraining and require professional differential diagnosis. This article shares concepts and cannot replace medical evaluation.
Three Specific Risks for Taiwanese Riders
- Summer heat: Humid heat substantially raises the physiological stress at the same power output. Using your winter training plan in summer is secretly adding intensity. Move high-intensity sessions to early morning, or do them indoors on a trainer with adequate ventilation.
- Weekend warrior mode: Busy weekdays, then one 6-hour ride on Saturday plus 4 hours on Sunday. Training stress is concentrated and the recovery window is narrow—a common source of excessive fatigue in amateur riders. If possible, insert 1–2 short sessions during the week to spread the load out.
- Social media comparison pressure: Someone else’s training log is not your workout plan. You don’t know their training history, recovery conditions, or whether they’re currently accumulating fatigue.
A Simple Self-Monitoring Practice
No expensive equipment needed. Every morning, spend 30 seconds recording three things:

Record consistently for 4 weeks to establish a baseline. After that, if you deviate clearly from baseline for 3 consecutive days, dial that week’s training down. This is more accurate than any app’s automatic suggestion, because it’s your own data.

Top riders can handle that kind of season density not because they don’t need rest, but because they manage recovery as part of training—sleep, nutrition, deload weeks, daily monitoring, none of it skipped.
You can’t replicate a pro’s training volume, but you can replicate their attitude toward recovery. Individual variation is large, and recovery needs change with age, training history, life stress, and health status. Progress gradually as a principle, and seek professional medical help when persistent warning signs appear. The road to getting faster is long, and the fastest way is often—actually resting when you’re supposed to rest.
