The Real Danger in Open Water Isn’t Running Out of Steam

Most open-water accidents aren’t caused by “exhaustion and being unable to swim back,” but rather by cold shock, hypothermia, and the panic that follows. Understanding this physiological mechanism and establishing an entry protocol is a required course for every open-water swimmer and triathlete—more important than any pacing strategy.

Cold Shock Response: The First 60 Seconds After Entry Are the Most Dangerous

Suddenly entering cold water (especially < 15°C, or even 20°C for those unacclimatized) triggers the cold shock response:

  1. Involuntary gasping (gasp reflex)—if your face is in the water at this moment, you will inhale water.
  2. Heart rate and blood pressure spike, hyperventilation, dizziness.
  3. Panic is amplified, judgment declines.

The first minute after entry is the high-risk window for drowning. Self-rescue principle: do not immediately swim hard. First grab a fixed object or tread water, control your breathing for 30–60 seconds, and wait until the gasp reflex passes and your breathing stabilizes before starting to swim.

Hypothermia Progression

Warning signs: your stroke becoming increasingly “weak and uncoordinated,” slurred speech, inexplicable drowsiness—these are hypothermia, not “getting tired,” and you must stop training and get out immediately.

Wetsuit Water Temperature Limits

Wetsuits greatly extend safe time in the water, but there are limits:

  • Most triathlon events mandate wetsuits below a certain water temperature and prohibit them above a certain temperature (to prevent overheating); specifics follow each event’s regulations.
  • A wetsuit is not “invincible warmth”—in extremely cold water you will still gradually lose body heat. For long distances, add a thermal cap and consider neoprene gloves/socks.
  • Overheating is equally dangerous: swimming long in a thick wetsuit in warmer water can cause core overheating, dehydration, and dizziness.

Pre-Entry Safety Protocol (Do This Every Time)

  1. Know the environment: water temperature, currents, rip currents, tides, entry and exit points.
  2. Gear: bright-colored swim cap, tow float, wetsuit when necessary.
  3. Swim with a buddy or be seen: never train in open water alone without anyone knowing.
  4. Enter gradually: splash water on your face and back of the neck, acclimatize in stages, so the cold shock reflex happens under controlled conditions.
  5. Set a turnaround point: set a conservative turnaround based on feel and time—better to be early than late.

Cramps and Panic Management

  • Calf cramp: roll onto your back and float, pull your toes toward your body to stretch the gastrocnemius, breathe deeply, and don’t force the swim.
  • Panic: float on your back or grab your buoy, lengthen your exhales, slow your breathing down first, then reassess your direction. Remember: a buoy and back-float allow you to rest indefinitely on the surface.

Coach’s note: In open water, the greatest ability isn’t how fast you swim—it’s “knowing when to stop, and having the courage to stop.” Every seasoned open-water swimmer has at least one “I’m glad I got out that day” story. Give yourself that same wise decision.
