The Norwegian had an excellent overall campaign, finishing 12th in the general classification. For a climber from a second-tier team to break into the top five on Alpe d’Huez is a very solid achievement.
6. Remco EVENEPOEL (RED BULL - BORA - HANSGROHE) +2:29
A pivotal moment. EVENEPOEL lost 2’29" to POGAČAR on this stage, and his overall deficit grew from 4’32" to 7’11". This was his most painful day of the Tour—the 28 seconds he clawed back in the time trial were repaid fivefold on Alpe d’Huez. But there’s another side to it: he held onto second overall, and his buffer over third-placed DEL TORO remains intact.
7. Isaac DEL TORO ROMERO (UAE TEAM EMIRATES XRG) +2:41
The Mexican, born in 2003, is this edition’s white jersey holder and UAE’s second-in-command. He won stage 2, becoming only the second Mexican rider ever to win a Tour de France stage. On this stage he was just 12 seconds slower than EVENEPOEL—considering EVENEPOEL is an Olympic gold medal-level all-rounder, that gap shows DEL TORO’s high-mountain endurance is already approaching the elite tier.

The two crossed the line together. SEIXAS is the biggest French hope of this edition, ultimately finishing 4th overall (+11’56")—the best result among the host nation’s riders. SKJELMOSE finished 6th overall.

Notably, 20th-placed Tom PIDCOCK — the winner at Alpe d’Huez in 2022 — finished 8 minutes 22 seconds down on this climb this year. He ended up 9th overall. In four years, he went from the protagonist to a supporting role on this mountain, which is also the cruel side of this sport.
27th-placed Adam YATES tells a different story: UAE’s senior core member, finishing over 10 minutes down on this stage, showing his task that day was to position POGAČAR before the foot of the climb, after which there was no need to hold anything back.
13. The Four Leader Jerseys
Yellow Jersey (Overall): POGAČAR’s total time after the stage is 67 hours 53 minutes 00 seconds. EVENEPOEL trails by 7 minutes 11 seconds, DEL TORO by 9 minutes 42 seconds, SEIXAS by 10 minutes 06 seconds, and MARTINEZ by 13 minutes 00 seconds. The gap stretched from 4 minutes 32 seconds to 7 minutes 11 seconds in a single day, and the last shred of theoretical suspense in the yellow jersey battle is gone.
Green Jersey (Sprint Points): Mads PEDERSEN (LIDL-TREK) continues to lead. This was a pure mountain stage, and the sprint points at the summit finish were taken by GC riders, having no impact on the green jersey picture. PEDERSEN has worn the green jersey since Stage 4, and this edition marks a major milestone in his career.
Polka Dot Jersey (King of the Mountains): CARAPAZ finished 3rd on the stage, once again collecting a large haul of points on the HC climb. He has worn the polka dot jersey since Stage 6, and this stage effectively sealed the KOM title completely.
White Jersey (Best Young Rider): DEL TORO finished 7th on the stage, keeping the white jersey secure. He has not relinquished it since reclaiming it on Stage 15.
14. Team Tactics Review
UAE TEAM EMIRATES XRG — A perfect day. The team leader won the stage, broke the record, and extended his overall lead; the second-in-command, DEL TORO, held onto the white jersey and third place overall; a rider of Adam YATES’s caliber could afford to completely let go in the final 13 kilometers. This division of labor—“leader wins, domestiques defend, helpers are used up and discarded”—is the standard template this team has honed over the past few years. The only point worth criticizing: they seemed to leave no domestique by POGAČAR’s side in the early part of the final climb—but when the team leader himself is the strongest engine on the road, the importance of that diminishes.
RED BULL - BORA - HANSGROHE — A bitter day. EVENEPOEL lost 2 minutes 29 seconds on Alpe d’Huez, showing that his threshold climbing at maximum intensity is still not at POGAČAR’s level. But from the perspective of the whole race, their strategy was correct: commit resources to summit finishes and time trials (back-to-back wins on Stages 15 and 16), and limit losses as much as possible on pure climbing stages. Mattia CATTANEO finishing 30th, 10 minutes 44 seconds down, shows their climbing domestiques were spent before the base of the mountain.
EF EDUCATION - EASYPOST — The team that got the most value out of this Tour. CARAPAZ single-handedly carried the polka dot jersey, two stage wins, and the most combative rider award. For a team without yellow jersey ambitions, this is textbook resource management.
TEAM VISMA | LEASE A BIKE — After VINGEGAARD’s abandonment, their entire race plan was rewritten. KUSS 4th on the stage, Davide PIGANZOLI 19th, Bruno ARMIRAIL 28th—visibility, yes, but no results. Looking back, their opening team time trial victory was almost their happiest day of the race.
BAHRAIN VICTORIOUS — MARTINEZ lost Alpe d’Huez by 6 seconds. A miss of that margin is both good news and bad news for the team: the good news is they have a climber who can battle POGAČAR to the final 500 meters on the biggest stage; the bad news is that kind of opportunity comes only once a year.
DECATHLON CMA CGM TEAM — The most solid French team of this Tour. SEIXAS 9th, RICCITELLO 11th, PRODHOMME 25th, BENOOT 29th—four riders inside the top 30. SEIXAS finishing 4th overall is the most promising signal in French cycling in recent years.
15. A Taiwanese Rider’s Perspective: Translating Alpe d’Huez into Taiwanese Climbs
Alpe d’Huez matters to Taiwanese riders because it is one of the few famous European climbs whose specifications can be directly compared with Taiwan’s signature climbs.

Several things can be read from this table:
First, Alpe d’Huez’s gradient level is closest to Fengguizui in Taiwan, but it is three times the length. If you want to experience Alpe d’Huez’s intensity curve in Taiwan, the most direct approach is: ride Fengguizui three times consecutively at race pace, without rest in between. It will be extremely painful—and that is the point.
Second, the “5.5% average gradient” of the West Approach Wuling is a deceptive number. Wuling’s elevation gain is diluted across 55 kilometers, with a flatter section between Cuifeng and Yuanfeng in the middle. What truly matches Alpe d’Huez’s intensity is the final stretch from Kunyang to Wuling, and the continuous steep section from Cingjing to Cuifeng.
Third, the psychological feeling of “one switchback after another, counting how many are left at every turn”—the hairpins on the upper section of Wuling are the closest experience Taiwan has to offer, though the scale and the sense of sanctity differ. The 21 signs on Alpe d’Huez are a peculiar psychological device—you always know how much remains, which is both a comfort and a torment.
Pacing Advice (for those who want to ride it, or train for that intensity in Taiwan):
- Don’t set your pace for the whole climb based on how the first 2.5 kilometers feel. The steepest part of Alpe d’Huez is at the very beginning. If you feel “this isn’t so bad” between signs 21 and 19, then you are riding too hard. The right approach is to deliberately hold the first 2.5 kilometers at 95% of your target power, saving your matches for the middle section.
- Take the outside line through the hairpins. The inside of every hairpin is 3% to 5% steeper than the outside, which is why all the pros take the outside line. Amateur riders instinctively cut the inside for the shorter distance, and the result is an anaerobic surge at every corner—after twenty-one of them, you’re cooked.
- VAM is your best self-assessment tool. If you can sustain a VAM of 900 to 1,000 m/h on the upper section of Wuling in Taiwan, then you can complete Alpe d’Huez in roughly 65 to 75 minutes—which is already a very good amateur level. Compare that with POGAČAR’s 1,896 m/h, and you will gain a whole new understanding of the word “professional.”
- Shift to a bigger gear for the final 1.5 kilometers. The gradient in the ski station area drops to 4% to 6%. If you stay in your climbing gear and grind at a low cadence, you will waste one to two minutes. On this section, you should shift up proactively and raise your speed.
16. Pogačar: The Man Who Turns “No Need” into “Do It Anyway”
To understand the weight of this stage, you have to pull the camera back and look at who won it.
Tadej POGAČAR completed his fifth Tour de France overall victory in 2026 (2020, 2021, 2024, 2025, 2026), tying Jacques ANQUETIL, Eddy MERCKX, Bernard HINAULT, and Miguel INDURÁIN to become only the fifth rider in history to win the Tour five times. When he first took the title in 2020, he was just 21 years old—the youngest Tour champion since Henri CORNET in 1904. In both 2020 and 2021, he swept the yellow, polka-dot, and white jerseys in the same year—something only MERCKX had done before him in 1972.
His résumé also includes the 2024 Giro d’Italia title (winning the overall by nearly 10 minutes, the largest margin since 1965), the 2024 and 2025 UCI Road World Championships (the 2024 win in Zurich came from a solo attack with more than 100 kilometers remaining), and dominance in the one-day classics: three wins at the Tour of Flanders (2023, 2025, 2026), four at Liège–Bastogne–Liège (2021, 2024, 2025, 2026), five consecutive at Il Lombardia (2021 through 2025), and finally Milan–San Remo in 2026. His total of 262 weeks ranked No. 1 in the UCI World Ranking is an all-time record.
Here is where this man found himself on the afternoon of July 24, 2026: leading the general classification by 4 minutes 32 seconds, with his main rivals already out of the race, a queen stage with 5,425 meters of climbing awaiting him the next day, and only three days of racing remaining. Any rational athlete in that situation would choose to “play it safe.”
He chose to go full gas on Alpe d’Huez—and casually took a record that PANTANI had held for thirty-one years.
This is not the first time. On Stage 6 of the same edition, he set the fastest-ever time up the Col du Tourmalet and soloed to a 2-minute-38-second victory—before he was even wearing the yellow jersey in week two. This pattern of “going full gas whenever there’s a chance” is often questioned on tactical grounds (wasting energy, adding risk, making more enemies), but it is precisely why POGAČAR is POGAČAR: he treats every stage as a one-day race rather than treating twenty-one days as a resource-allocation problem.
For cycling fans, this kind of rider is extremely rare—and extremely entertaining.
17. Further Reading: The Names of Alpe d’Huez
What makes Alpe d’Huez what it is isn’t just the gradient—it’s the fact that the names on those 21 switchbacks form a condensed history of the Tour de France.
1952: Fausto COPPI. This was the first time in Tour history that a stage finish was placed at the summit of a true mountain. Before that, the Tour crossed mountains but never finished on top of one. The organizers’ reasoning that year was to create drama, and COPPI answered the experiment with a solo victory. That win also cemented the “mountain-top finish” as a core vocabulary of the modern Grand Tours.
1976–1989: The Dutch era. Of the first 14 ascents after the climb returned in 1976, 8 were won by Dutch riders, with Joop ZOETEMELK alone taking it in 1976 and 1979. The Netherlands had no mountains to speak of, yet established dominance on France’s most famous climb—that contrast is why the nickname “Dutch Mountain” persists to this day, and it directly gave birth to the orange culture at switchback 7.
1995 and 1997: Marco PANTANI. The Italian’s 36:50 and 36:55 on this mountain became the reference point for everyone who has ever climbed Alpe d’Huez since. Whatever complicated judgments history may pass on that era, those two numbers sat on the clock for thirty-one years.
2013: Christophe RIBLON. That year, for the first time in Tour history, Alpe d’Huez was climbed twice in a single day, with the narrow descent of the Col de Sarenne in between. Frenchman RIBLON turned the race around on the second ascent—a day French fans had been waiting a long time for.
2018: Geraint THOMAS. The Welshman won the stage at Alpe d’Huez while wearing the yellow jersey—extremely rare in history, because yellow jerseys usually ride to control rather than to win.
2022: Tom PIDCOCK. The Briton took Alpe d’Huez that year as its youngest-ever winner, thanks to a display of descending skill that was replayed endlessly. Four years later, in 2026, he finished 8 minutes 22 seconds down on the same mountain.
2026: Tadej POGAČAR. The first man to go under 36 minutes on this climb.
18. The Physiology of Short, High-Intensity Stages: Why 129 km Hurts More Than 200 km
Stage 19 gives us a perfect lesson in a commonly misunderstood idea: a short stage is not an easy stage.
First, short distance eliminates “pacing room.” On a 200-kilometer mountain stage, riders can cruise below threshold for the first 100 kilometers, saving blood glucose, muscle glycogen, and neural fatigue for the finale. But when the stage is only 129 kilometers and the climbing starts at kilometer 5, that allocation strategy goes completely out the window. Everyone has to operate near threshold from the very first minute.
Second, the value of the breakaway is amplified—and so is the difficulty of making it. A breakaway on a short stage doesn’t need to survive as long, so theoretically its success rate is higher, which means more riders want in and fight harder to get there. At the same time, GC teams know time gaps can spiral out of control and clamp down harder. The result is that the power curve in the opening phase becomes a jagged plateau—the most energy-draining output pattern in all of cycling.
Third, the recovery window disappears. A 3-hour-18-minute stage looks easier than a 5-hour one, but if more than 2 of those 3 hours and 18 minutes are spent above threshold, the accumulated metabolic stress is actually higher. And short stages usually mean another hard day follows—this edition is the perfect example: Stage 19 was short and brutal, and Stage 20 was the queen stage with the most climbing of the entire race. The organizers’ intent was obvious: to test riders’ recovery capacity with two consecutive days of extreme load.
What this means for Taiwanese riders: If you’re used to measuring training intensity by “distance,” Stage 19 will show you how unreliable that metric is. A 60-kilometer ride with 1,500 meters of climbing, held at threshold the whole way, hits the body far harder than 150 kilometers of flat cruising. Taiwan’s terrain is actually ideal for this kind of training—the Beiyi Highway plus BuYanTing, Yangjin Road plus Datun Mountain, or any route that “starts climbing within the first five kilometers” can replicate the intensity structure of Stage 19.
19. Equipment and Nutrition: The Distance Between Pros and Amateurs on This Mountain
Alpe d’Huez is one of the few Tour de France legendary climbs that amateur riders genuinely go and ride. Every summer, tens of thousands of people pay their own way to fly to Le Bourg-d’Oisans, all for those 13.8 kilometers. So it’s worth discussing the real differences in equipment and nutrition.
Gearing. On a climb with an average gradient of 8.1%, professional riders typically use a 34-tooth or 36-tooth small chainring paired with a 30-to-34-tooth large cassette cog. For amateur riders, this is absolutely not the place to cut corners—better to bring gearing that’s too easy than to be forced to grind at 50 rpm on an 11% section. The “Wuling gearing” (34×34 or lighter) that Taiwanese riders are accustomed to works perfectly on Alpe d’Huez—in fact, it’s even more necessary.
Nutrition pacing. At 13.8 kilometers with an amateur riding time of roughly 60 to 90 minutes, one bottle of water and one energy gel should theoretically suffice. But the real key lies before the climb even begins—the difficulty of Alpe d’Huez is “what condition you arrive at the base with.” Professional riders will push hard to fuel during the 15 kilometers before the base, while amateur riders often arrive at the bottom already empty.
Core temperature management. In July, the Le Bourg-d’Oisans valley frequently exceeds 35 degrees, and the relative wind speed while climbing is only 15 to 20 km/h, making heat dissipation extremely inefficient. The high intensity of the first 2.5 kilometers combined with low wind speed is the real reason many people “blow up” on Alpe d’Huez—it’s not that their legs give out, it’s that their core temperature spirals out of control. Pouring water over your head, the back of your neck, and your forearms is what professional riders do on climbs like this, and amateur riders should do the same.
Mental pacing. The biggest function of the 21 switchbacks is actually as psychological anchor points. It’s recommended to break the climb into three segments: turns 21 to 16 (hang in there), turns 16 to 7 (find your rhythm), and turn 7 to the finish (use up what’s left). People who count by “how many turns remain” typically hit a low point around turn 14, because by then you’re already exhausted, but the number still has a long way to go.
20. Spectator’s Notes: Three Moments Worth Rewatching from This Stage
If you’re going to rewatch the recording of this stage, there are three moments most worth slowing down:
First: the Noyer climb (kilometers 18 to 25). This is the most visually stunning part of the entire stage—the road hangs on the rock faces of the Massif des Écrins, and when the helicopter camera pulls back, you can see the riders like a string of beads clinging to the grey-white cliffs. At the same time, this is where the peloton first truly splits. Watch which teams still have full formations of three or more riders here, and you can predict their resources for the final climb.
Second: the right turn at the base of Le Bourg-d’Oisans (around kilometer 114). This is one of the most classic “positioning battles” in the world. Suddenly cutting from flat city roads into a 10% gradient, the top 30 positions get completely reshuffled in the final two kilometers before the turn. Watch who enters the turn in the top five, and you’ll basically know each team’s intentions.
Third: turn 7, “Dutch Corner” (around kilometer 10). This isn’t a tactical focal point—it’s a cultural one. A sea of orange, alcohol, speakers, and smoke is the most extreme spectating scene in cycling. At the same time, watching the riders’ expressions and pedaling rhythm as they pass through can tell you who still has something in reserve and who is already hanging on by a thread.
21. Summary: One Mountain, One Afternoon, Thirty-One Years
Stage 19 is only 127.9 kilometers, making it one of the shortest mountain stages of this edition. It doesn’t have the grand total elevation gain of the following queen stage, doesn’t have the high altitude of the Galibier, and carries no suspense for the overall classification. From a race management perspective, this was a day whose “result was already written.”
But it left behind one piece of footage from this Tour—and perhaps from this decade—that will be replayed over and over: a man in the yellow jersey, leading the overall classification by more than four minutes, with absolutely no reason to take risks, pushing himself to the limit through 21 hairpin turns, and then taking down a number that had stood for thirty-one years.
Cycling is often about calculation—calculating time gaps, points, matches, and wind direction. But occasionally, it returns to its most primal form: one man, one mountain, one clock.
On the afternoon of July 24, 2026, Alpe d’Huez was that place.
And for Taiwanese riders, the most practical takeaway from this stage might not be the record itself, but rather the fact that it proves once again: the outcome of a climb is largely decided before you even reach the base. How you eat, drink, shelter from the wind, and position yourself over the first 114 kilometers determines how many cards you have to play over the final 13.8. This principle applies in the Alps, and it applies just the same at Wuling.
