Cycling Periodized Training: Why "Accumulation → Impact → Taper" Beats Even Distribution

“8 hours a week, a little over an hour a day on average” sounds disciplined, but riders who train this way usually fail to perform on race day. Why? Because the body adapts through a signal cycle of “stimulus-recovery-supercompensation,” and spreading training evenly results in insufficient stimulus and excessive recovery.

The core concept of periodized training is Accumulation → Impact → Taper, deliberately building fatigue and then precisely releasing it to peak performance on key days. This training model was pioneered by Soviet coach Matveyev in the 1960s and is still widely used by World Tour teams and Olympic athletes today.

The Supercompensation Principle

The supercompensation model in exercise physiology works as follows:

  1. Training stimulus: triggers fatigue, depletes glycogen, causes micro-damage to muscle fibers
  2. Recovery period: the body repairs and increases reserves
  3. Supercompensation: reserves exceed baseline after repair, entering a “temporary peak”
  4. If not stimulated again: reserves fall back to baseline and supercompensation disappears

The key is that “the next stimulus should land at the peak of supercompensation.” If the stimulus comes too early, fatigue accumulates; if it comes too late, supercompensation is lost.

The problem with even distribution (the same every day): the stimulus intensity is insufficient to trigger noticeable supercompensation; the body just keeps circling at “baseline workload.”

The Three-Phase Cycle: Accumulation → Impact → Taper

Phase 1: Accumulation (2-4 weeks)

  • Goal: build training volume, lay the foundation
  • Content: primarily Zone 2 long rides, with Tempo and SST added
  • TSS/week: baseline × 1.0-1.2 (e.g., if your usual is 500, this phase is 500-600)
  • Fatigue: ATL rises slowly, CTL grows in tandem

Phase 2: Impact (1-2 weeks)

  • Goal: short-term overload, deliberate fatigue
  • Content: high-density VO2max, Threshold, and SST sessions, 3 high-intensity workouts per week
  • TSS/week: baseline × 1.3-1.5 (e.g., if your usual is 500, this phase is 650-750)
  • Fatigue: ATL rises rapidly, TSB drops to -20 to -30

Phase 3: Taper (1-2 weeks)

  • Goal: recovery + supercompensation
  • Content: total volume drops significantly, keep 1 short VO2 or Threshold session to maintain sharpness
  • TSS/week: baseline × 0.5-0.7 (e.g., if your usual is 500, this phase is 250-350)
  • Fatigue: ATL drops sharply, TSB returns to +5 to +15

Why Is Even Distribution Bad?

Physiological Perspective

The anabolic response requires sufficient stress signals to activate. With the same 1-hour Tempo session every week, the body fully adapts after 3-4 weeks and stops producing new adaptations. In contrast, the concentrated high TSS of an Impact week puts the physiology back into “alarm mode,” producing adaptations far greater than even distribution.

Psychological Perspective

Evenly distributed training “doesn’t hurt enough to be memorable”—the psychological stimulus intensity is insufficient. The concentrated high intensity of an Impact week gives riders a genuine experience of “real suffering,” and mental resilience training for race day is built during this time as well.

Data Perspective

Friel’s TrainingPeaks data analysis shows: CTL grows by 2-3 per week under even distribution, but under the Accumulation + Impact model it grows by 10-15 every 4 weeks (including one recovery week)—faster cumulative gains over the long term.

Getting TSB from around -20 to +5 in the 7 days before a race means the taper was done right.

Common Periodization Mistakes Among Taiwanese Riders

  1. No Impact week: afraid of fatigue and blowing up, forever circling in Accumulation
  2. Taper too long: cutting volume 3 weeks early, losing sharpness by race day
  3. Taper too little: still hammering 500 TSS the week before, legs are dead on race day
  4. Wrong block sequencing: two consecutive Impact blocks without a recovery block in between
  5. Blindly copying World Tour plans: ignoring that your own CTL is only 55—you can’t apply a plan designed for someone at 80

Application to Taiwanese Events

Large Climbing Races Like Wuling (usually April, September)

  • 12 weeks out: Accumulation Block 1 (build base Z2 + SST)
  • 8 weeks out: Accumulation Block 2 (start adding VO2)
  • 4 weeks out: Impact Block (concentrated high intensity)
  • 2 weeks out: start Taper
  • 7 days out: short opener; the day before the race, 30-minute opener + 3 × 30-second standing sprints

Series Races (OCUP, CHC)

  • Mid-season, use a 4-week microcycle of “2 weeks Accumulation + 1 week Impact + 1 week Taper”
  • Avoid going all-out in every race; designate A-races and B-races

Conclusion

Evenly distributed training gives you “average results.” Periodized training, through the rhythmic design of Accumulation, Impact, and Taper, forces the body into a cycle of “high stimulus-deep recovery-supercompensation,” turning the same training hours into higher performance. If Taiwanese riders want to see real progress at key events like Wuling, KOM, and OCUP, breaking the habit of “doing the same thing every week” and embracing the rhythm of “deliberately hard some weeks, deliberately light others” is the gateway to scientific training.
