In Taiwan’s cycling community, “riding up Wuling” is a milestone, and achieving a good result in the KOM King of the Mountain Challenge is the ultimate goal for many riders. From the Puli Geographic Center Monument to Wuling (elevation 3,275m), 55 kilometers with 2,750 meters of climbing—this is not a challenge that can be completed “by feel.” You need precise numbers, scientific training, and a well-thought-out pacing plan.

W/kg: The Core Metric for the King of the Mountain

Why is W/kg More Important Than Absolute Watts?

On flat roads, an 80 kg rider producing 280W and a 60 kg rider producing 280W will travel at nearly the same speed (air resistance dominates). But on gradients above 7%, gravity accounts for more than 80% of the resistance—at this point, power-to-weight ratio (W/kg) is the key determinant of speed.

Two Paths to Improving W/kg: Increase W or Decrease kg

Path One: Increase Power (Increase the Numerator)

12-Week FTP Improvement Plan:

Phase 1: Aerobic Base (Weeks 1-4)

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Sweet Spot 2 × 20 minutes @ 88-93% FTP, 5 minutes rest
Wednesday: Zone 2 ride 1.5 hours
Thursday: VO2max intervals 5 × 4 minutes @ 106-110% FTP, 4 minutes rest
Friday: Rest or core training
Saturday: Long climbing ride 3-4 hours
Sunday: Recovery ride 1 hour

Phase 2: Threshold Strengthening (Weeks 5-8)

Path 1 (pure power increase): Need FTP 300W (+50W, difficult)
Path 2 (pure weight loss): Need to drop to 62.5kg (-12.5kg, unrealistic)
Path 3 (combination): FTP 270W + weight 68kg → W/kg = 3.97 ✅
  Power increase of 20W (feasible) + weight loss of 7kg (progressive over 3-4 months)

This is a key factor many cyclists overlook:

Hehuan Mountain (Dayuling → Wuling)

Distance: Approximately 18 km

Starting Altitude: 2,565m (Already at high altitude)
Characteristics: Entire route above 2,500m, significant oxygen impact
Pacing: Reduce power by 15-20% compared to sea-level FTP
Time Goal (3.5 W/kg): Approximately 70-80 minutes

Tataka (New Central Cross-Island Highway)

Distance: Approximately 90 km (Shuili → Tataka)
Elevation Gain: Approximately 2,400m
Highest Altitude: 2,610m
Characteristics: Long distance, gentle gradient in the first half, steep in the second half
Pacing: Conservative for the first 50K (65-70% FTP), steady acceleration for the final 40K
Time Goal (3.5 W/kg): Approximately 3.5-4 hours

High-Altitude Acclimatization Strategies

If the race is held at high altitude (such as KOM), early acclimatization is important:

Option 1: Arrive Early at Altitude (Most Effective)

5-7 days before the race: Arrive at 1,500-2,000m altitude
Activity: Easy riding 30-60 minutes daily
Accommodation: Stay at high altitude whenever possible (Cingjing, Hehuan Mountain Lodge)
Note: Mild altitude sickness in the first 2 days is normal

Option 2: Arrive Early on Race Day

If you cannot arrive early at altitude:
  Arrive at the start 2-3 hours before the race
  Do 15-20 minutes of light warm-up
  Allow your body to begin adapting to the lower oxygen partial pressure

Option 3: Simulated High-Altitude Training

Use a high-altitude training mask (limited effectiveness, but better than nothing)
Or deliberately reduce ventilation on the trainer
Note: Scientific evidence on the effectiveness of high-altitude masks is inconclusive

Race Day Practical Checklist

3 days before the race:
  □ Carbohydrate loading (increase carbs by 30% per meal)
  □ Reduce fiber intake (avoid gastrointestinal issues)
  □ Get adequate sleep (8-9 hours)
  □ Confirm vehicle and equipment

1 day before the race:
  □ 30-minute easy ride + 2-3 x 30-second leg openers
  □ Normal breakfast, carb-focused lunch, easily digestible dinner

Race morning:
  □ Eat breakfast after waking up (3 hours before the start)
